Are there differences between these driers?

Greetings to all.

Are there differences between the Hansa and Kuehl driers? (other than price..) I've an '89 Coupe and wish to install a fresh drier for upcoming AC work.

Not sure, but a little advice I got a new dryer at Advanced Auto Parts for $9. This is on an SC mind you...

I think a drier is a drier. Just make sure its for R-12 or R-134a, and the it screws in with the right threads.

$9? Did you miss a zero (0)? I replaced mine with Kuehl cost almost $100. Good thing is it works.

$14 online, was $9 in the store, I get 43 to 45 deg vent temps. System is stock, I rebuilt the compressor last year and replaced the shunt valves, but other than that it's original.

The drier is just silica gel pellets.... dry sand and its function is to absorb moisture from inside the sealed system (to keep ice from plugging up the lines). So $9 is reasonable for replacing the silica gel. You can probably just remove the solids and replenish with new silica gel from supply store.

... and I got closed to 70 on 90+F day. The best I ever gotten was 55 on 80+F day. The average I normally get is around 20F to 25F below the exterior temperature

Being a devoted customer to our sponsor..I see price differences on great orders between Kuhl and others,


I'll be using R12 for sure.

The one for R134A is 69.00 vs. the other at 152.00

therein the question...looks like R12 driers are more expensive? I s this the difference?

Yea, or $14 at the link I supplied, they are nothing special and almost on the level of "consumable" given that the are normally replaced when the system is opened. I think the Kuhl allows for more system capacity, but not sure.

I also run R12, and I keep my condensers clean, and my system well maintained. My engine tends to run on the cool side after the rebuild and that's helped greatly. I may switch compressors next year just to get over the York engine lag issue. But that's no big deal when you own recovery equipment like I do.

Think I'll digest some specs this evening on these dryers. I want to evacuate on this run and completely recharge, fully intending providing a fresh dryer. $9.00-14.00 is a far cry from $150.00. I'm out to note the differences,...as an engineer (moreso electronic) I would guess this rests with, either, specs,..or (simply) brandname.....you know the drill...

time for homework, I guess. Those who "know", please chime in.......for the record,..$150.00 is not a problem,

Doyle: Give Charlie Griffiths a call. He's a straight-shooter and he'll explain to you why his product is more expensive. At that point, you can decide whether to buy from him or go elsewhere. I can tell you, though, that with Griffiths you know the product will be top-notch and fit correctly. You'll also have one of the country's most knowledgeable 911 a/c guys standing behind it. There's value to that....but you'll have to determine if it's worth the additional expense.
