there may be a Varioram in my not-so-distant future as well
although i may upgrade to 3.8, cams, etc or the max effect of 330hp

i'll have some very good local help here in Portland as many of these conversions have been done recently

More valuable information, thanks Bill! I was just going to ask about the reverse light connection, I don't remember seeing it on the engine loom, guess it must be there somewhere!

The only info I need at the moment is Pictures/plans/templates etc.. for the engine tin modification, anyone? :D

Any ideas what's supposed to happen with this hose (marked with red dot):

I'm about 2 weekends from installing the engine now :D

MrPerkles 10-16-2007 01:22 PM

hurry up and get it off that crate Ace :D

AirCooledExcellence 10-23-2007 10:17 AM

Done some more jobs over the last few days!

Fitted the clutch:

Installed the Patrick Motorsport conversion harness:

There's just 4 wires to solder, they connect to existing wires that run from up front to under the seat (if you were doing this in a SC or earlier car you have to run wires up to the fusebox area). The wires are permanent live, switched live, tacho and fuel pump.

I fabricated some sheet metal plates to cover up the holes left where the power steering pump was located:

Then re-united the engine with the gearbox:

We are definitely GO for installation on Saturday!

Good, now that you have all that done crate it up and send it to me:D Threads like this keep me looking to the future. Eventually I'd like to do a 3.6 swap into my 79SC then the leftover 3.0 would go into the 914

johndglynn 10-23-2007 11:00 AM

Ace, did you buy a new baby starter for it or is that one of our hotrod ones?

Also he is neglecting to say that he has just had the trans rebuilt.

AirCooledExcellence 10-23-2007 11:03 AM

It's the same starter mate!

Oh yeah, forgot to mention the tranny rebuild, it's just had all new syncros, bearings and a dog ring :D

AirCooledExcellence 10-29-2007 10:00 AM

Well guys, it's in and it's running :D

Jevvy arrived on Saturday at about 10, we had the engine bolted up by 11, All fuel/oil hoses and electrical connections were made by 12. Then we turned it over without the DME relay to get some oil sloshing around.

First attempt at starting failed, straight away Jevvy knew what it was and the fuel rails were bled (loads of air in there). Next attempt and vroom!! Sounded great (hadn't fixed up the heat exchangers at that point ;)).

Sorted out a few more problems and it's running as sweet as a nut now.

A couple of pics:

I've not had much time to work on it since Saturday, but managed to get the clutch adjusted today. First drive tomorrow hopefully!

village idiot 10-29-2007 10:14 AM

Nice! the only thing more satisfying than the the first time you fire a new engine is the first drive.

Congrats,
Tom

This is my current project as well. But much further behind. I am very jealous.
