Help - Electrical problem

I asked my son to connect the battery in my 930 and he connected the negative to Positive and visa versa.
Smoke came out of the engine behind the cooling fan. with engine off.
When I reconnected the cables correctly, I tried to start the car , I heard knocking sound with engine turns and the car will not start. (It sounded like the starter)
What would normally go bad when you connect the cable to the Battery backward?

Appreciate any help
Thanks

Smoke behind the fan (from within the fan shroud) sounds like a fried voltage regulator- that is, if you have an alternator with an integral votage regulator.

Just my guess.
