I put the darkest tint available for sale on my car, but it is black and I like the look. Some folks think that it looks ricey and that's cool. You are not allowed any tint at all here in Germany and I always got away with it even though the polizei did want to talk to me a few times when I was fueling up at the ESSO station. Now it has none at all since they began cracking down on it and will make you rip it off as you stand there watching , or take your license plates and leave you stranded. Do not argue with the polizei.

I forgot to say that I also did my own tint job and it came out pretty darn good. I made some templates from some posterboard and once I had them trimmed right I cut the film and went after it. It was very easy, even getting the back window done was easy. A few screws and the back of the car comes apart and you can lift it right out and get to the job at hand. Try it yourself, cuz you have nothing to lose except for twenty bucks. and you can say that you did it yourself. James

Paul, which windows does he want to remove... did he explain why remove? IMHO I would be careful having some guy tearing my Porsche apart. I would ask the guy in Campbell he does a lot of BMW's... not that they necessarily require the same process.. which windows are you going for? Remember the tint will have to go over the rear window heat traces and getting it off is where the taking window out will likely be needed.. also could be that doing a really good job also requires taking windows out... I would not be surprized if you get leaks.. and odd looking seals. as you can tell I not really in favor of this... but I have to admit is will look cool.. but not really necessary on this type of car.... it is cool or not as it is

ok.... the Sunny Oaks place is the place I trust.... he is big on removing at least the rear window... I don' t know how many Porsches he has done.... probably a lot of them.... Don Wise is about 2 blocks from there... I guess first find out what windows he wants to remove. Which Porsche mechanic recommend the Sunny Oaks guy? I can't imagine the$200 less guy will be pulling any windows.... if yes, it would make me even more concerned... I would guess doing a good job with the rear window in the car would be very hard... the other 2 back windows are easy to get at.

Tom Amon recommended the Sunny Oaks place. Who's Don Wise and what's the name to his shop? Does he tint?

It was fine, my M3 had dark interior (dark tan/blk. combo) so really made the tint look darker than what is really is... My friend who owns a tint place here in Fremont, does have 70% tint. I just went to visit him last week, he jud did a new Beetle, looks pretty good. It really depends on your interior color, cause the 70% on the Beetle looked like 50% I have also seen 70% on other cars that is way too light almost not worth it... |

In case anyone cares, here is the California law on this:
"(d) Notwithstanding subdivision (a) [prohibits any tinting], clear, colorless, and transparent material may be installed, affixed, or applied to the front side windows, located to the immediate left and right of the front seat if the following conditions are met: (1) The material has a minimum visible light transmittance of 88 percent. (2) The window glazing with the material applied meets all requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 205 (49 C.F.R. 571.205), including the specified minimum light transmittance of 70 percent and the abrasion resistance of AS-14 glazing, as specified in that federal standard. (3) The material is designed and manufactured to enhance the ability of the existing window glass to block the sun's harmful ultraviolet A rays. (4) The driver has in his or her possession, or within the vehicle, a certificate signed by the installing company certifying that the windows with the material installed meet the requirements of this subdivision and identifies the installing company and the material's manufacturer by full name and street address, or, if the material was installed by the vehicle owner, a certificate signed by the material's manufacturer certifying that the windows with the material installed according to manufacturer's instructions meets the requirements of this subdivision and identifies the material's manufacturer by full name and street address. (5) If the material described in this subdivision tears or bubbles, or is otherwise worn to prohibit clear vision, it shall be removed or replaced." Note that: (1) It appears that no tinting on the windshield at all is allowed. (2) CORRECTION: It looks like the material that is applied can't have more than 88%, but combined with the glass, the standard is 70%, as indicated. (3) You have to get this certificate from the installer. I wonder what they'd say if you ask for what change they offer for which they will give the certificate. Personally, I put on a pair of sunglasses. Last edited by Jay Laifman; 11-05-2007 at 01:09 PM.. |

Some quick additions. I found the section that allows tint on the windshield. It allows it ONLY above a certain line. That line 29" from the top of the seat bottom - that is, measure 29" straight up from the place you sit. Actually, you start 5" forward of where the seat bottom hits the seat back, then measure up. For me, sitting here at my desk, that line would be about the middle/top of my forehead.
Rear side windows are not restricted. Rear windows are not restricted if there are two side mirrors that give a view 200 feet back. |
