A windy, fiery, rocky Sunday drive the hills of SoCal.

Noah930, mkaraoglan and myself went on our almost weekly early morning drive through the Santa Monica mountains, but this time, things were a bit more exciting.

It has been really windy this weekend and there is a nice fire going in the Malibu Hills and at one part of our drive, about 5 sheriff cars flew by us on Kanan, going towards the beach (we were at the intersection on Mulholland Hwy. We saw plenty of flashing lights, but they were all too concerned with the fire.

The wind added some obstacles for us as well. I was in front at one point and came around a corner, only to find a tree branch lying across the road. The recent rains and wind also have caused a lot of mini rock slides and dirt to cover parts of the roads. It gets the adrenaline going!

You lucky sods. Great weather and fantastic roads. Here I am holding my breath. Any day now, I will discover that the hated salt truck has made itīs premier round for the season, effectively parking the Carrera until spring. Duh..

Still, great pics! Yes, how did that German end up there ??

Guys,

Get out! FAST.

I traided SoCal Wind and Fire for Colorado Snow & Ice. The sun is out and snow melting here in Denver. I hope the wind stops and fire dies in LA.

More to come about my visit.

Best,
Grady

Markus, I have always wanted to take an extended holiday in Europe and ship my 911 over for the trip. What a blast it would be to bring my car home to Germany and drive it on the Autobahn! I imagine the looks I would get with my California plates.

I was working on my Targa top last night and could not put it on for the drive today - makes a world of difference in rigidity for canyon driving. I have twigs, leaves, dirt, dust and rocks in my car from the drive today! The 997 was in front at one point and he drove over some dirt and rocks and the ones that did not hit the hood and windshield, hit me.

Dave

One more from today. The fire is on the left (out of sight) and the smoke was blowing out to sea.

That section of Mulholland always has fresh skid marks. Very tight corners. It reminds me of the Gold Rush ride at Disneyland, but this is better than an E-ticket ride .

Did you take a 'spirited' drive on Encinal Canyon/Mulholland Drive on a Saturday before September 19? I turned off of PCH that afternoon and got stuck behind an SUV until it turned off around the first corner. I was going to back off and hang back but a black 997 Carrera S was behind me. When the road was clear, I thought I would have some fun but the 997S stayed glued to my tail.

It was a great drive, a nice exciting workout. If it was you, then thanks for the fun , and I hope I wasn't holding you up!

Here's some photos of my car to jog your memory(thanks for not passing me)

Hey! I recognize some MA plates on that 930!

I don't think I've made blatant 'Red Sox are in the World Series' reference yet today...

Dave:

The Targa looks fantastic in a couple of those pics--very nice 911 for SoCal climate.

I tried a Canyon run myself through Azusa Canyon to Glendora Canyon Rd at 7:00 a.m. Sunday. Conditions went from no wind to 60-70 mph gusts. There was also major debree and dirt on the road. I had to turn around and head home or risk high centering my Carrera on a boulder.

Thanks Mike. Do to chassis flex, I have a habit of keeping the top on. I was working on the top Saturday night and it was not ready to be put on. It's nice having the top off, but I did pick up a lot of leaves and dirt do to the wind.

Hey Noah, how long are you going to hide from the law with those MA plates?? ( I'm keeping my NH ones as long as possible but NV isn't as tough as CA)
