Pertronix .vs. Pertronix II
Has anybody tried the new Pertronix II?
I had problems with Pertronix I a few years ago and went back to points. Now I am considering trying them again. TIA, Greg |

I just fitted Pertronix to my C3 - was a breeze and no probs with it on an 80-mile rip today. What probs did you have last time?

Thanks for the reply John..
The problem I had was that the reluctor only had 5 poles, pertronix sent me another and it only had 4. The 5 pole actually worked with one cylinder not firing, so the pole was simply missing. It was easy to just go back to fresh points and drive rather than keep beating on pertronix for a good reluctor. |

I fitted the 1867 and was 6 poles, everything went together quickly and easily and it all worked first time. The car is no quicker with it but it definitely runs better. I am going to strip my dizzy for a quick clean and rebuild this weekend though, I suspect advance weights sticking slightly.
Fit it would be my advice Greg, how great is it to be rid of points! Best wishes, JG

Very unusual, the Petronix plant is located very close to me and if you send me your 5 pole reluctor (was it for an early Audi?) I can have them swap it for the correct 6 position reluctor.
I do a lot of repair work for guys that own replica 550 Spyders and Speedsters and I've probably installed at least 30 Petronix units with no problems, both in performance and having the necessary parts. I installed a Petronix (I) on my 1973.5 911 and it works great. The important thing that most people forget about is that the unit grounds to the base of the distributor. Make sure both surfaces, module base and distributor floor, are totally clean and free of crud. Also, use a drop of Loctite on the screw that holds the module to the base of the distributor. If it gets crudded up, it will cause intermittent mis-fires Last edited by ljowdy; 10-25-2007 at 11:02 AM.. |

John,
I will probably do exactly the same thing after I get a Pertronix II. So the dizzy gets a cleaning and lube and the Pertronix will be installed where I have more room to work. p.s. I have a Carrera 3.0 as well, federalized in 1977 buillt in 76. ljowdy, I still have both reluctors, I dont think it was an Audi or Bimmer part as they would be evenly spaced. Pole 6 was simly missing. The 4 pole was probably for a 912 or 914, but the unit I purchased was definetly an 1867. PM me with you addy and I mail it if you're willing to pursue it. Thanks for the offer. Greg |

Pertronix doesn't use a reluctor, per se, it is a series of magnets glued onto a machined ring! The sensor is a Hall-effect switch ... by Allegro, Siemens, Honeywell, etc.
Reluctors require a magnetic pickup coil as used by Chrysler, Bosch, etc. ... a much more robust and reliable technology!!!

I knew it wasnt the proper term, I just didnt know what else to call it. (and I work for Honeywell, so you'd think I would) Greg |

Early_S_Man,
What do you think of the Pertronix Coil? Greg |

Looks like I may be the board guinea pig for pertronix II... I'm also going to use the pertronix coil. The pertronix II is supposed to adjust dwell at higher RPMs as needed.
Thanks to all who responded, Greg |

Greg, I installed the Pertronix II in my 1976 911S several years ago. I bought the PII rather than the PI because I assumed it was an improvement, so I really can't compare the performance of the two. I can say that the PII has performed flawlessly. It is an excellent idea to clean and lube the advance weights before the installation, because you won't be into the dizzy again for many years. The hardest part of the installation was pressing the magnet ring onto the cam. It is a very tight fit, and hard to feel when the ring is fully "home".

Greg,
I can't say for sure, since I haven't tested one with my Bosch or Permatune CDI units on my instrumented test bench. Do you have the Pertronix part number? They have several, and I know that Pelican sells #45011, an oil-filled coil subject to failure mounted nose down ... The #45111 epoxy-filled coil looks good, and is close to factory specs.
