Where to find free broken engine parts?

I had a crazy idea, not sure if its worth the money for paying for shipping for parts, but here it goes. As i am inspiried by terminator 2, i would like to build a porsche engine from broken parts, not one that would actually run. For example, a case that has a chunck blown through it that reveals the innards, like arnolds face in T2. I think if when it's done, and clean it up, and paint some of the parts, it could look real cool. Especially if i throw a neon light or something in the case, it would look cool at night. Something that i could slap together to put a glass table on top of for my future apartment. Plus i never built an engine before, it'd be nice to see how things "are supposed" to fit together, hehe. Of course i would leave off the intake runners and all. Gatta balance the table on the heads. Or even if i could get a blown motor somewhere real cheap, that would work, but that'd need to be local at a junkyard. I could only imagine the freight cost of shipping something like that. Im thinking i should stick with a 3.2 motor casue thats my engine in my car, so i guess it would make sence to build something to learn about what i already have. It would be cool to see an engine with 3 missing pistons, and 4 rods in it, with a snapped crankshaft that you can see through a case crack.

That's a pretty cool idea, i think the hard part will be "free" parts. I look at what people are parting out cars for (and the high number of responses) and I sometimes think my car is worth more in pieces than whole.

I'd been thinking of something similar for awhile...mainly because I've never torn into an engine before and would like to...not as an art piece. I think it'd be a helluva cool art piece!

If anyone has a broken case they're just going to throw out, i guess i would want to start with that. I could pay for shipping, but i dont have much money. I guess once i get a case, i could work from there, and keep this thread alive with pictures and such.

Wow RarlyL8, that is EXACTLY what i was to do, a mule engine like that, to that completeness. What kind of parts do you have? What cases?

Local Porsche repair shops toss used parts into a recycling bin all the time. Noboby's going to save a case-half that has had a hole blown through it by a loose rod, as if they are going to repair it. At that point, we all know it's a chunk of recyclable aluminum.

Actually I have a case half with a hole blown through it. They are useful for repairing other cases with holes blown through them. Not uncommon in the world of racing. No kidding.

Companies that create cutaways showing internal workings of things like engines, gearboxes, etc. charge big bucks. Yours could be this or an example of personal expression - art.

If anyone has a single 911 con rod laying around that they would be willing to let go, cheap, please let me know.

I checked ebay, and besides people looking to sell whole sets, there was a seller with a single '68 911 rod for sale for $98. I'm not sure what they are smoking, but it must be really good stuff.

Most shops put this stuff in the recycle. Work a deal.

On the other hand, you could always buy a MM engine.

I visited the Porsche museum about 2 weeks ago. They had this sitting on the showroom floor. Almost a little sad, it's nicer than ANYTHING I've ever seen in any early car and they sliced it and diced it !! There was no sign, but I think it's a 2 liter, non-MFI. Close to my 2.2 MFI anyway...

Nice, but IMHO, they should have removed the starter to get a better view of the transmission.

I've never noticed before. That starter is about almost half the length of the gearbox. Is that right?

Then I pictured the boss Helumt, looking down at the cost analysis of the tools recently purchased and saw that they weren't getting their money's worth/hour out of the cutters and die grinders... Helmut yells over "Hans und Heinrich, get over here and cut pieces out of these engines !!! NOW !!"

I've got some grenaded pistons and cylinders around somewhere. I used to have a 930 case with a hole blown in the side, but I sent it to RarelyL8. I recently got rid of a few other bad cases when I moved my junk to a smaller space.

Masraum, I may have a con rod or two or twelve. I don't remember what's left in my bone pile.

I think it's about 1/3 the length... The starter is just the black part. The silverish part it's bolted to is still part of the bell-housing.

-Hard to tell because some of the bell-housing is cut-away right there on the other side of the starter mount.
