Some help with binding manual window please.
I've done a search but find mostly threads relating to electrical window problems.
Car is a 70T with a driver side window that will go up fine but when I try to crank it down it seems the forward edge of the glass dips down slightly. When I put pressure on the trailing edge while cranking down it's ok. I have the door cover completely off, but I know nothing about the inner workings of a window. I don't see any obstructions in the grooves. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks. Ulrich |

Hey Ulrich,
I just finished pulling out my window regulator and did a thorough cleaning, inspection and re-greased all moving parts. Taking the regulator out was quite easy. Our regulators are different but shoud be basically the same steps: Get tape or clamp to hold the window in place while working on removing the regulator. If you don't you will most likely damage or shatter the glass. Mark where the adjustment screws are so when you re-install it will keep it original position. Removal 1. Roll the window halfway, clamp/tape in place. 2. Remove the bolts holding the regulators, mine had 6 (including 1 adjustment bolt) 3. You should notice the Regulator's front end drop. 4. Remove from the Regulator from the Glass' Rail by moving it forward. 5. You may need to lower/raise the window a bit to get the right position to remove it from the rail. It can only be removed by going forward first then the rear guide wheel. Then Raise the window by hand and clamp in place. 6. I had to remove my front bracket that hold the Glass Guide off of the quarter window 7. hold the Regulator from the back then ease it out. It's a snap ![]() Cleaning & Grease?Lube 1. Cleanwith Carb/Brake Cleaner all the Rails and Wheels. This would be a good time to inspect the wheels for damage. This maybe the cause of the window dipping. 2. In the middle of the Half Wheel with Teeth, you will see a Bracket with a bolt, Mine limits how far the mechanism will go. Mark the point and remove it. 3. Move the Teeth Wheel past the limit point. 4. You can now remove the Spring for cleaing and Grease DO NOT USE WD40 ( I greased mine because there was rust on it ) 5. Inspect the two Pins that hold the Spring and the one that places tension on it. These tend to go bad. You can buy replacements from Pelican Parts $32 6. Reassemble, You should notice a smoother operation This took me 1 hour to do. Now my passenger side window does not hesitate or make noise. Side effect it moves faster than my driver side, Oh well I got to do driver side now. Long story, sorry, but do not be afraid of removing the Regulator to inspect it. Clamp or Tape to hold the window in place and Marking the position bolts are the only CAUTIONs in working within the door. Hope this helps, Jim

Jim.
Thanks for the detailed reply. It looks like I'll have to remove the window frame to get the regulator out. On the early cars that's the only way. Ulrich |

No Problem Brother,
Your issue sound like a broken plastic wheel, Mine looked pretty beat up over the years. I think you have 15 years on my baby. Don't forget the clamp/tape, people always forget that part.

I had three early cars with a similar problem (all manual crank windows). I would begin to roll down the window and the forward edge would dip lower and the window would freeze. If I pushed on the back part of the window when I cranked, it would slide down. Big PITA.
I solved it by replacing the felt in the window frame. All I needed to do was take off the frame off the door, leaving the glass attached to the regulator. Then replace the felt. To help the process I would heat up a standard screwdriver with a torch and slide it under the felt. It would melt the glue and come out easy in one piece. Replace with felt purchased here and reinstall. The major problem was solved but, since I was in there, I always made sure to disassemble the rest of the moving parts, clean, re-grease and put back together. Took the better part of the day but was a nice improvement. My '69 912 has just started to show the same symptoms, so now make it four cars.
