Jeff,
Have you replaced the ball cup and shift rod bushings? They often wear out, but don't show the wear visibly. While you have the shifter assebly out to change those bushings, take extra time to disassemble and clean the shifter. There are some 'wave' washers and shims that can wear out. If possible shim the pins so that there is no appreciable play, and lubricate the shifter and the two bushings you replace with plenty of moly grease, Swepco 101, for example! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

I replaced all those plastic pieces (shift rod, ball cup and coupler bushings) recently. Or at least I watched while Tyson did it. The coupler bushings were not very worn. the most worn part, by far, was either the ball cup or the shift rod bushing, I don't remember which. That's where all the play was.
Tyson marked the shift plate, and the tunnel, with a magic marker...a very good idea for accurate reassembly. ------------------ '83 SC |
