You need to replace this. Sorry but you had to hear it. Rust is the culprit here.

You can buy a complete new axle w/joints for about $300. (I got mine wholesale through work for $175 brand new)

moisture caused the pitting. looks kind of ugly, but if new joint still fits tight with no backlash i would use them. never say one break or strip out. yet.

Oh there is one more alternative. Someone makes a gun drilled replacement shaft.(shaft only, no joints) I think they are $300 for the pair. 5 lbs. lighter. I believe they advertize in Excellence.

Adam,

Sure looks like you need to replace that one! And, I guess salt on the roads in winter did the pitting. You can keep it along with the best couple of repacked CV-joints as an 'emergency' spare ... no need to throw it away!

If there is any backlash like John said, then yeah it might damage the splines of the new joint. If it fits tight it would be O.K. for now.

'for now?' meaning soon i'll have to deal?

i guess i'll freakin' take the hit once again with this whole thing and just find another shaft. all i need is the shaft-i just got all 4 new cv's.

i'm assuming it's cool to get a used one, provided neither end looks like mine. i'm gonna check with p.a.p. and automobile atlanta. if anyone else knows where i can get a good one used, let me know.

you know, it looks like some idiot in a hurry had worked on this side the last time around with the previous owner, without any care whatsoever. this side that is so pitted had 2 different colors of grease inside the boot, and the snap ring barely even fit on the shaft end. the boot looked like it was off another car, and the joint was virtually immovable in all directions. obviously whoever 'worked' on it the last time didn't even bother to dismantle the joint and clean everything before just shoving more grease in...

thanks, everyone, once again for getting me through another project!!!!!!!!!!!!

I replace both Axles in my car last summer. Although the milage was relatively low 55K, the driver side was clunking. I bit the bullet and replaced the other even though there was no sign of a problem. I track the car and alway want to do the most to prevent mishaps and tows home. I understand the labor issue, but the whole axle's (Labro) were around $200 each. There is much less labor just bolting these in then to go through the rebuild and repack with unknown relability time. Would'nt that be a better route?

Adam,

Wasn't there a mystery vibration for the last month or so? That axle could have been the source, as those splines have quite a bit of material missing! And if you wanted to used the car lightly for a few days, I would recommend repacking one of the old joints to put on the axle where that corrosion is. There is a good chance of damaging the splines on a new joint if put on that axle!

warren-

you are correct. the mystery vibration has been with the car since i bought it! i'm hoping this is the culprit!!! i had put a new cv on the damaged axle dry to see if there was any play, and sure enough, there was a little. right now i have one of the 2 cv assemblies back in the car, and i'm going to try and track down a shaft in the meantime.

i may try your suggestion as a temp fix while i'm waiting and reassemble the other side with 2 old cv's. thanks for the heads up!!!!!
