Targa Top Rebuild

Thanks to everyone with the help on my last couple of posts for my 90 targa now I need help with my 1972 Targa.

does anyone know of any instructions or diagrams that list and shows all the parts of the top. I ask this because the top was in pieces when I purchased the car and now that I am in the final stages of putting the car back together I have to tackle the Top. I have purchased the new outer skin and headliner but need help on how to recover and to see if I am missing any parts. Any help would be great and I hope there is info out there because I would like to do this job myself I like new challenges.

You can look at the PET (thttp://www.porsche.com/all/media/pdf/originalparts/en/E_911_73_KATALOG.pdf) and get a list of parts me an exploded diagram. It starts in page 372 of 484.

If it was me, I would talk to Dan Petchel.

Eddie,

Hear, hear on challenging yourself! I'm in the middle of rebuilding my 1970 top. The job was interrupted by a move, but it will resume soon, and I have a lot of disassembly pictures. What parts are you most curious about?

Mike

Just fabric and glue, if I understand correctly what you're asking. The plates float above the frame. There's a strip of vinyl running along the front and rear edges to give a little extra support, and then the main fabric of the top wraps around that. The spacing and front to rear alignment have lots of room for error, but they really determine the final shape. Here's a couple pictures to give you some idea. Let me know if you need something else.

Good luck. I'll be reassembling this in a few weeks too.

Mike

Mike... is it possible to adjust the center plate's position (I'd want to move it backward slightly) once a roof is apart?

I'm definitely no kind of authority on this, not yet having put one back together successfully, so let me quickly put on my flame-proof suit.... I would think moving the plates slightly could be done, and would have some effect (you're trying to close a gap, Discseven?), but you couldn't move them much. You just have to separate them from the front and rear edge vinyl that they're glued to, slide, and reglue. However, they also hold the clips that limit the opening of the frame, and which need to stay in the same place. There's a little freedom of movement of their captive mounting plates (in the depressions on either end of the aluminum shell pieces). So you might get away with a few mm movement. The top cover shape will tend to pull things back into original alignment, but in the end I think it should be possible to change the shape very slightly.

It will be interesting to watch the results you get from this. I just DIY'd my whole interior with decent results but I've not gained the nerve to take my not awful but not great top apart.
