Drag and drop 83 SC brake system into 71?

My track toy is an 83 SC. THe brakes work fine with no fading issues. I've rebuilt everything and it has new rotors and gives me no problems.


However, I have a 71 911 Targa that was converted along the way before me for "spirited" driving. It has a 2.7 and coilovers. THe suspension is very firm and the brakes are track-oriented. They work fine when up to heat but even with new MetalMaster street pads they are not very grippy and progressive. The calipers appear to be S fronts and M rears.

I have everything I need to rebuild the S and M calipers including new lines and an OEM, larger master cylinder.

Now, the track car is getting a new pedal cluster to accomodate the new G50. And the track toy is also getting another 150 or so hp, and summer is coming so I suspect I may overwhealm the brakes quickly.

Also, the Targa is going to Targa Tasmania this year so any "sporting up" will be fully utilized.

So I guess my questions are twofold...
1. Can I fairly simply remove the SC brakes with the booster, pedal cluster, rotors, calipers, lines and ebrake from the track car and install that in the 71? Wheel clearance should be fine...the race wheels and tires are transferring over also. I'd fit a proper race brake setup like wilwood or ap racing, etc to the track car.

2. Should I do that? I'd sell off the S and M calipers. I hear the S calipers are commanding a price now and I have new SS pistons and seals, could sell them completely rebuilt and ready to use. That might partially fund the race brakes.

As I understand it, if you've got the 'S' calipers on the front, you've already got the 3.5" spacing on the front struts, so SC calipers and rotors bolt right up - as do, for that matter, 3.2 Carerra rotors and calipers, which are even bigger pistons and 24mm thick rotors instead of 20mm.

3.2 Carerra stuff is relatively plentiful and cheap used, although you might need to fit a valve to adjust the rear bias, depending. Some people like the rear bias.

I don't know what size master cylinder you'd have in that car, but you should probably use a 19mm minimum for 3.2 Carerra calipers.

You can transfer the SC calipers from the SC and use them on the '71 w/ S struts, it all bolts up the same on both. The rotors are also the same on both. The power brakes however are much more of a chore to t/p, probably not worth attempting. The '71 uses a 19.05mm manual m/c the SC a 20.6mm vac boosted one, either size works w/ SC A & M or early S & M

I think your 71 issues are more with the pads and maybe fluid. Metal Masters are not exactly a high end performance pad. I would go with a proper full race pad and high boiling point race fluid as well as some type of cooling system and you will see a lot of improvement.
