Replacing heater wire (control wire)

I’m getting ready to replace the wire inside the coil thing that runs between the lever between the seat and the exchanger box on my 81. I have done a couple of searches, but didn’t see any write ups. Any suggestions on how to replace the wire? Should I run it from the engine end to the lever, or vice-versa? Any secret for removing the heat lever switch plate?

Thanks!

heater control wire........

I believe that you will find that each end of the wire is attaced via a small (5mm?) bolt that has a hole drilled thru it, with the wire clamped between two washers. These bolts tend to rust and therefore break when you try to remove them. Be sure to have a couple on hand prior to starting the job. When I replace the two heater wires on my SC I used a couple of rubber vacuum caps packed with grease on the ends of the tube the wire runs through. That way the tube is sealed to outside dirt and moisture and the wire gets a little lube each time you move the handle. Good luck with your project!
