Another new member -
After reading the messges from Jay and Danoli I thought it was time to step forward and join in ... I
I've been occaisonally looking through the forum for the past 10 months or so. I had begun shopping for my first Porsche. after a 40+ year wait, and was looking to learn as much as possible about the various 911 incarnations. Their strengths and weaknesses and who better to learn from than owners talking about their cars. I didn't have a lot to invest, and knew that what ever I bought would have to the best I could find for my dollar. With the help of three Porsche owning friends, and Pelican's forum and tech tips I decided that a 1984 through '89 Carrera was my best choice. Then came the search for the right car, the internet ads quickly convinced me that even an '84 or '85 would be a stretch for a guy who wanted to keep peace with his wife. After about 6 months of searching and having my friends tell me time and again " no this is not the right one", I found an ad with no photos and a price so far below anything I'd seen I ignored it. In late August I went for a ride in my friend's '84 Targa - I was pumped. I opened the ad with no photo and found a link to a second site ... photos! The car was local but had arrived here from California the previous summer, just in time for the owner to experiece 7 straight weekends of heavy snows and blizzard conditions, the car went on a lot, on consignment. A phone call gave many of the right answers, a physical inspection showed the car to be rust free, original paint in good condition but very dirty and neglected by the dealership. A pre-buy inspection at a reputible local Porsche shop showed the mechanical aspects to be free of any immediate major needs. A diamond in the rough .. I drove it home that night .. spent several days doing the most extensive cleaning and detailing I'd ever done ![]() ![]() The wife ? She still hasn't sat in it ... her loss ...

Welcome!
She looks fantastic! So the wife is a little reluctant? Once in the passenger seat, wind in her hair - she will love it. No one can resist a nice Carrera on the open road. ![]()

Welcome roodog; great story!
Your wife will get over it. When I recently bought my 993 my wife wasn't really sure of what I was up too. I bought the car, which made for two pcars in the garage and immediately started to talk about buying a Ferrari too. Ha, ha. Keep 'em guessing. |

Welcome, I did a bout the same thing. This is the place to be to learn about your car. After a while your wife will come around, if she doesn't you will stop caring.

Thanks to all for the warm welcome - after hitting the send button earlier I thought I might have been a bit to wordy -
I'm hoping by spring, when it's time to uncover the Targa and get it out of the garage for a run in the mountains, my wife will come around. Her reluctance kind of threw me, when we met 20+ years ago I was driving a 280ZX with T tops - she loved that, I thought this would get us back to weekend rides and some together time. We've been raising our grandson for the past 14 1/2 years, he's now sixteen and I'm sure he could use some free time from us too ... ![]() Wait 'til she finds out that I signed her up as a family co-member in the PCA. ![]()

It can take a while to get the wife to come around. If you haven't already, you might want to attend some local PCA events, such as the 'Arrive & Drive'. I attended several last summer- great fun! Also, any chance of some interior pics?
Cheers, Paul.

Hi Paul, thanks for the suggestion on the "Arrive and Drive" ... only sent my ap in.online, on New Years Day. he email response said approximately 2-3 weeks to learn if I'm accepted.
![]() A lot of functions and events I'm soon to learn about and experience. A local shop which had been recommended to my wife for service on her 2002 Maxima turned out to be a pleasant surprise for me. Turns out the owner and his staff are geared towrd German cars .... when I took her down to pick up her car the sign outside featured a 911. I went in a met the owner - an avid Porsche guy, PCA member and was invited to attend a PCA tech session he's hosting next Saturday. I'm looking forward to some enlightenment on the inner workings of the 915 , I've got some questionable synchros and some questions I'd like to ask. I'm waiting for a bit of a break in the cold so I can replace the shift bushings in the car. I beleive that will offer a good deal of help but the synchro issue will still be there. Looking forward to some of the Rocky Mountain Chapter doings this year, I think that many would be a good combined activity for us. Willie

It seems like there is always something 911 related going on Colorado. I am sure you can find plenty of happenings there even outside PCA. Good luck and welcome to the madness!

Luke, until you said she let you have a second one I was gonna ask if her name was Peggy ... I hear ya' screaming ... that's exactly what I'm hearing. Trying to convince her that with the top of and side windows up it's no different than a sun roof .. Thanks for the compliment on the car I feel very fortunate to have found the car I did , for the price I paid ... the letters on the tags are PLF ... couldn't figure out what to make out of Porsche L .. F ..., Then it hit me "Pretty Lucky Fella" ..

Paul, I short changed my response to you ...
Great videos of your cars ... I know you've got to be proud. As for interior shots, I don't have any tonight but I'll back her out of the garage tomorrow and take a few. We're expecting snow flurries tomorrow night, most of the killer storm in California should stay west of us. The car has 142k miles with a reasonable amount of wear nothing to lose sleep over. The black leather shows some grey wear spots where the the previous owner rubbed against the side of the cushions getting in and out. I'm hoping I can dye the bad areas without making them look worse. Otherwise no rips or tears, had to do some major cleaning and conditioning the first few days. Carpeting and mats were a god-awful mess when I bought it, as I mentioned it was on a dealers lot on consignment, they hadn't even vacuumed it out. I steam cleaned all the floor coverings a minimum of 2 times those first few days. I was able to meet the previous owner a few weeks after the purchase, he was impressed, said he had forgotten the crests on the mats had red and gold in them. All in all a hand full of "small "items that I can do, the biggest item might be synchros which I've been told probably won't be a major concern for another 10-15,000 miles.

Wayne, thanks for providing this great venue of information and comraderie.
To some degree I feel that I already know you , the first must have I purchased after bring the 911 home was your "101 Project" needless to say we vicariously spent a few hours together. I saw my first Porsche when I was 8 or 9 years ols, a neighbors son brought it home when his tour of service was completed in Germany in the late 50's. It's taken a while but I finally have my own Porsche, the fever is there ... Willie

From one Willie to another I would like to welcome you. That is a beautiful car you have picked up. The polished Fuchs look great on a dark car. Don't worry about the wife, she'll come around soon enough.
