Cool Alternator swap..........

I am having to replace the alternator in my '80 SC due to a worn wipe ring on the armature. The existing alternator is a Paris-Rhone Valeo and I have sourced a rebuilt Bosch to take it's place. My car had been changed to utilize the internal regulated alternator by a previous owner so the Bosch unit I bought is one for a Carrera model. The connecting posts are somewhat different on the Bosch unit and I am hoping one of you Pelicanites will have a picture or wiring schematic for the IR type unit. I really don't want to have a melt down after all this work!

Thanks in advance,

Cool Alternator mounting bolts

I just tried fitting the new Bosch alternator to the fan housing. The alternator body thru bolts are too short! the just barely come to the back side of the fan housing. Any suggestions? Are there longer (5mm) bolts available?

Thanks,

Fred, doubt you'll find any sources here.....I tried with no luck. Finally, I was able to find some 5mm allen cap bolts at a local independent hardware store. The threads on the threaded end were cut a little shy such that the threads bottomed out just short of of the cap end seating. Since I dont have a metric tap and die set to cut the thread just a little longer, I used a couple of washers under the cap head and all was good. If you can't find any locally, I'd be happy to pick up some and send them to you.

Fred, Did you check the alterntors side by side? Just want to make sure you have the right alternator and it's seated in the housing good.

Cool Wrong Alternator !.................

Well, not only are the body bolts too short, but the armature shaft is also too short for the fan thickness. So..............back to the parts store to look for the "right one" ! I would try to find a Carrera fan and housing, but I have already had these powder coat painted. Thanks for all the suggestions and leads.

"I have sourced a rebuilt Bosch to take it's place"

Bosch NEVER made an internal regulator alternator for 911s until the '89 964.

Total Mickey Mouse thread!

Hey Loren,

If you ever get to Georgia, look me up. I live in Moultrie, Georgia. I would love to have the opportunity to K**K Y**R A**! You are about worthless!

I did not say that the Bosch IR alternator was from an earlier model, I said that it was a rebuilt unit that was listed as being for a Carrera. I believe that includes the model year 1989.

If there is anything bogus on this bulletin board it is you!

"I did not say that the Bosch IR alternator was from an earlier model"

IT'S NOT A BOSCH ALTERNATOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And the picture is a 3.2 alternator with 5mm studs in a 911SC (early) housing,
i.e. 6mm housing holes.

Again, total Mickey Mouse and another DIY that should have his car at a Porsche shop.
Come on guys, let's treat our great cars better than that! No butchers allowed.

Bottom line: Order the correct alternator from Pelican Parts.
