Post Mating Question - 3.3l Turbo to a 901

Boys,

Simple question:

Is there a method to mating a 901 to a 3.3l Turbo motor. Is there a flywheel mod. that can accomplish this? etc.

My motor upgrade decision has been made. The 2.2E is on the outs. The 3.3l Turbo motor is arriving soon. Time to make the car perfrom as good as it looks. I was never really fond of the Turbo 4 speed. Not to mention the torsion tube mods necessary for install.

Any commentary would be helpful. Pros and Cons welcome. Thank you.

Rich Boylan

I do not know of any kits to do it but I think that a 901 will not hold up to a 3.3 turbo motor due to it's lower strength. You will "get on it" only once and .........

good luck

Rich,

No way to make a 901 work with the 930 'pull-type' clutch ... 911-series from '70 and '71 would be 'very-iffy' due to unsupported first gear! A 915 is easier to deal with and probably liveable with pump/squirter/cooler and filter mods per the pics in Bruce Anderson's Handbook. No specifics on the mods, though!

I would worry that a 901 -- caught between those wheels and that engine -- might end up getting twisted into a pretzel. If you don't want to go as far as a G50 and coil-overs, then I would consider a later 915.

Beautiful car, by the way.

Rich - did the "writing checks you can't cash" goating finally get to you?

I'm doing the same thing right now. I would suggest getting a 915 and setting it up the way you want. Get the clutch you want, put it all together, and then swap the drivetrains out/in as a unit. The 915's are cheap compared to what you are about to spend on this swap. Good luck and keep us posted.

Hello

With this rubber on the rear i think even the 915 will not survive. If you have luck you can replace the worn hypoids on a normal basis.

Rich is a good name, wish i where born under that brand.

901--No! Even if you could make it work, you would end up replacing it in short time...

I have mated several warmed over 3.3s behind 915 gearboxes with good results. Even the early mag-case 915 held up well. My recommendation is to swap in a later aluminum 915 trans. While you are at it, pay attention to youre drive axles and CVs. Don't forget oil cooling and stiffer torsion bars to compensate for the increased heat and weight. What about brakes...
