Cool Best of 964 and 993

Soon I will be in the market to purchase a 964 or 993. I need info or opinions on the best years for these cars with regard to reliability, ease of tuning, transmission gearing, potention problems and personal preference.

I am aware of the cylinder head sealing issues with the early 90 and 91 964 models. I am also aware of the secondary air injection problems with the 993 models of 96, 97, and 98s.

My intentions down the road is to make this car a 3.8 litre and improve the suspension.

Any input appreciated.

Thanks,

Michel

There's just sooooo much info out there if you take some time to look through old and new posts here and over on Rennlist, lok in the model sppecific forums

the short version of my take
none are very special stock(but that applies to most 911s make to day1 and it also depends on what you are loking for in a car), the 993 is the easier and more rewarding platform to build on but also potentially more expensive, though many parts are interchangeable between them the 993 starts w/ generally more desireable versions.

One note that jumps out to me is that if your looking or considering a C4, then by all means seriously value the 993 over the 964. It is lighter, more "dependable" and less expensive to maintain. The early C4's were complicated and derived too much from the cost no object 959.

No, I'm not an Anderson...."buy the latest model you can afford".

The 993 can be taken farther, yet is not as traditional looking and initially weighs more. More parts to be sold off as desirables so can recoup some of the intial buy in if one is going "light weight".

As Bill V. states...lots of material here and elsewhere on comparing. Rennlist is handy as its broken down into chassis groups a little more. Wayne certainly offers the same, here, but everyone hangs out for the most part in "911" tech.
