Carrera Airbox Upgrade??

I read somewhere that a gentleman had installed an "updated Carrera airbox without POV" on an '81 3.0L engine.

Do the later model airbox's work on the earlier 3.0L engines, and do they have an improvement that negates the need for a pop-off valve? Is it a "bolt-on" installation, or are modifications necessary?

Can't see how a Motronic airbox could ever work on a CIS system. The Motronic airbox is just that, an airbox to hold the air filter.

The CIS airbox is much more, it distributes the air, it houses the fuel distributor, the air flow meter, etc.

Yep, the new and improved airboxes with all that internal plumbing for the cold start mixture does eliminate the need for the POV.

So, install one on your 78 3.0 and you'll be able to sleep at night.

You two are talking about different things.
The SC airbox was updated in 1980 to include some internal plumbing for the cold start system.
But that is NOT an "updated Carrera airbox." Its the updated SC airbox.
SeaDweller's post implies installation of an '84-89 Carrera airbox on an SC. Not possible, as I've described. (Because he says the person put an "updated Carrera box" on an '81 SC. The '81 SC already came stock with the "upgraded SC airbox.")
Also, while the 80-83 SC airbox is an improvement over the earlier SC airbox, it DEFINATELY does not completely solve the backfire problem. A $50 popoff valve is a good idea on ANY SC.
Finally, it makes no sense to install a 80-83 airbox on a 78-79 SC, if the car is running fine. You can completely avoid the blown box problem by simply installing a pop-off valve. That will solve the problem for close to $1000 (parts and labor) less. (If you are rebuilding the engine or have a blown airbox, then it makes sense to use the later one, but it would be folly to go through all the work to remove a perfectly good early airbox for no reason.)

78-79 SCs had larger intake runners than later years, so forget it.
