What is this RED light Blinking on RoW Dash?
Hi, I cant seem to figure out what this red light that says "EX" on the dash of my 1978 RoW SC is. The car didnt come with a manual and the only owners manual that I have is the U.S. version that doesnt have this light. It is located in between the Tach and Speedometer. Can anyone enlighten me on this please?
Thanks, Jay ![]() |

My '79 ROW doesn't have one. Could it be the remains of an old car alarm.

This could be an add on or an OEM feature for the Japan market since this an RoW-Japan unit. The light looks factory original though, doesnt look like an aftermarket japanese accessory..

I believe that is the warning light for the O2 sensor(exhaust) possibly for a federalized, converted car.

The part# 477 919 209 B, is the O2 sensor light, but the year models that had these, do not match your year of car.

I have the same thing. I met some Japanese girls, and had them translate the manual for me a few months ago. Although they didn't know how to translate it perfectly, they suggested that it had to do with exhaust temperature.
I should also say that I've never seen it on. If you still have the manual, perhaps you could post the relevant page, and some of our Japanese pelicanites could verify the translation (my manual is in storage, but I might be able to dig it up over the next few days).

Interesting. Many euro cars from the 70's and 80's, in the infancy of emissions devices (EGR, thermal reactors, cats), had exhaust temp warning lights. That is what it is. "EX" for exhaust.
Designed to give you warning if you have a condition (i.e., clogged cat, malfunctioning thermal reactors, etc.) causing the exhaust to run way too hot. On many Italian cars, like Ferraris and Fiats, that light says SLOW DOWN. I always thought that was kind of funny, a gauge that doesn't tell you what's wrong, but tells you what to do. I thought the "EX" button was for when you wanted to get rid of your wife. Go for a drive with her and push the "EX" button

Watch what you say, the internet never forgets. Ask Mark Jensen.

A version of the '78 911SC, for the Japanese market, had a temperature sensor in the exhaust. Before the advent of three-way catalysts and O2 sensors, there was a two-way cat used and a thermocouple was placed at the cat's exit flange to warn of overheating, due to a malfunction that resulted in excess unburned fuel making it to the cat.
Look inside of the left rear wheel and see if you have a cat instead of a pre-muffler. If you do, you'll probably see a line leading from it into the engine bay. Same idea as the slow-down light on the Ferrari dash picture above. JR |

I thought it was an ex-wife proximity warning detector.

Well, you might find it described in the 1978 911SC Service Information book given to dealers. You can sometimes find these for sale on the internet. It may show up in other manuals, I've never looked.
Basically, if it gets above a cretain temperature it will turn on the light (assuming of course the thermocouple isn't malfunctioning.) This is intended to tell you to shut off the engine and investigate the reason for the excessive temperature. JR |
