Rolling idle...
my '82 SC has a rolling idle after the engines warms up, could this be caused by a bad O2 sensor? what else could cause this? thanks

When you say rolling do you mean Hunting? The idle bounces?
Try to disconnect the O2 Sensor at the engine compartment to see if it changes the idle to normal may run rich or lean though but idle should stop hunting. A Vacumn Leak, Use ether to see if spraying at the manifold hoses (6 point) cause an increase in idle. Do not spray in air filter. Check to make certain your oil cap is tight and the seal is not broken or too worn. It could be the ICV or do you have the WUR, sorry I am not familiar with the 82. Maybe the CHTS, I don't think you have that either. Pre 84's will chime in shortly Oh yeah Welcome to the Board ![]()

A hunting idle usually means a too rich mixture. There may be several reasons for this. Often the mix might simply be set too high, or the WUR may be out of adjustment. You should also check the O2 sensor, as Draco said.
Has this been the symptom since you got the car, or is it a recent occurence?

I have had the car for about a year now and its in the garage for the winter. I start it up every sunday to let the engine get warm and last week the idle was irregular after it got warm. I dont have time this weekend but I am gonna try to adjust the cis fuel injection to see if that did anything, disconnect the o2 sensor and check to see if there is a vacum leak. Thanks for the input, hopefully I can find out whats causing it.

Geoff,
I stopped warming up the car once a week during winter years ago. Current thinking is that since starting the car from cold causes increased engine wear, why do it when you are not actually going somewhere? Also it seams that increased bearing wear may arise from idling @ a steady speed. It causes further emissions from our already high (by today's standards) emitting cars to be released into the atmosphere. And it wastes gas. If you remove the battery and/or keep it on a tender, the car will start up fine when spring arrives. Regarding your symptom: If the engine starts well from cold but then the idle hunts when warm I would try the simple thing first. Try leaning the mix no more than 2 @ 1/16 turn increments of the screw. You can always turn it back. Always go slightly further CCW and then come back CW to get it to where you want it. Also try the O2 sensor test. I t seems a little unusual that this would happen when it is cold out, but not any time else during the past year.
