Cool Rebuilt gearbox problem...............

Pelicans to the rescue!

I just finished installing the engine and gearbox back into my SC. I pulled the drivetrain so that I could have the syncros redone in the tranny and did a major clean up/repair on the "stuff" on top of the engine (new hoses, etc.). The problem is that I now have a 2nd thru 5th gear (plus reverse) tranny! When I attempt to select 1st gear it feels/sounds like the slider is not moving far enough to completely engage 1st gear. Is there any way to adjust the shifting rods/forks without pulling the gearbox back out of the car? The gearbox work was done by a long time Porsche specialty shop here in Georgia.

I REALLY don't want to have to pull the drivetrain again, not for a while anyway.

You could try making a small adjustment to the shift coupler. Basically move the coupler slightly away from the shifter so as to make the throw a little longer. You can't do this much or the 2/4 will be a problem. If that doesn't work you will have to pull apart the tranny (or start in 2nd gear).

Did you replace the first gear synchro? If so and it was done by a reputable shop chances are it will take about a 1,000 miles or so to brake in. I recently had my first gear, 1st, 2nd & 3rd synchros replaced and it was a bear to shift for the first 500 miles or so.

When you undid the coupler to removed the transmission+engine, did you undo the little bolt (takes an allen wrench) in the coupler or did you undo the clamp on the coupler? If you undid the clamp, you lost the original adjustment and you'll have to adjust the coupler again.

To shift or not to shift, that is the question........

I did remove the shift coupler when I pulled the drivetrain. However, I have the coupler adjusted so that I can engage all the (other) gears. I may need to see if a slight move forward on the coupler shaft will let the shifter get into first gear. I had a bit of a struggle getting the side to side adjustment correct, but did not think of making the shift motion longer. Thanks for all the suggestions! I love this board.

Cool All Done!...............

I now have a 1st gear! The shift coupler was adjusted too close to the shifter rod, making it impossible to get into 1st gear. At least now I don't have to pull the whole mess apart again (at least for a while)!
