I suspect you are right. It would be kinda cool to have as a collectable.

Report this to ebay as criminal possible activity.

Best,

At Ventura there were tons of those for sale. Its not like it's the only place on the car that has a VIN.

It a blank plate with no numbers. How is that illegal? Are you not supposzed to put the correct numbers on the plate?

Many muscle car places have where you can buy the blank plates to have the original numbers stamped "AS A RESTO"

ZLP - you're right - it's not the only VIN on a vehicle, but certainly the most prominent, closely scrutinised and best starting point for a bogus cut & shut.

Sadly, he (or she) is sure to make a sale.

Not illegal. There are quit a few vendors in Southern Cali that sell them. Nothing new. Relax.

EXACTLY... Nothing worse than the unsuspecting, uneducated buyer, who's going to be duped. Hey I've got a genuine 72 RS with two different VINS across three different areas of the car and a non matching numbers motor and tranny. What do you mean it's not worth 100 large????

I think it would only be illegal if you stamp it with a different number? That has not been done yet but you are assuming it has..

guys!
this is a replacement part from Porsche. Any buyer that depends solely on this plate would be extrememly foolish. The trunk stamped vin #, and for usa 70-73 cars - the windshield #, should all match. Anyone (save a certain faux yellow RS owner that has been discussed at length on these pages) should have done their homework to ascertain a car is real.

This is NOT illegal to own, resell, or install as long as you are stamping the real vin number to the car it belongs to.
This is a terrific item for those whose cars' plates are messed up from abuse over the years; whether it be from accidents or scratching /denting them

For sure the unscrupulous could think it would work for nefarious means, but it would catch up with them in short order

Nicely said Dave. I thought about buying one years back but did a good job restoring mine.

Even if you get a blank VIN plate you still have to stamp it.
I have yet to see anyone duplicate the factory stamping correctly.

On that note, I even saw an RSR at the Rennsport Renunion III that was sold as the 'real' thing... it had a VIN plate just like this one but the stamping gave it away.

Cheers,

That others have tried and (some have) failed tells the story

As always, buyer beware

Absolutely correct. What is illegal are those selling VIN plates, already stamped, with a matching title. A blank VIN plate is just a piece of tin and doesn't become a legal "document" until stamped with a number. And, regardless of what VIN you stamp it with, you still have to create a matching title.
