changing early gauges to slip-in type.

has anyone had any experience using some kind of gasket on the early gauges (with the screw-on clamps) that would allow them to slip in like the later gauges. the gaskets from the later gauges seem too thick for the holes in the early cars.
anyone know of something more elegant than wrapping electrical tape around the gauge? unscrewing those things on my '69 was a serious PITA! any thoughts much appreciated. Don.

I'll shoot a couple tomorrow, but basically I want to be able to slip the guages in and out on my '69 and '66 without unscrewing the clamps on the backside.

haykait,
I do not know if this will work for you, but I have ground the later rubber mounting rings thinner and used them to mount the gauges without the screw on clips. If you have access to a bench grinder you can try this. Get about 10" of wooden dowel and use it to back up the rubber ring while you grind the ridges thinner. I let the ring float around the dowel to help keep the amount removed even all of the way around. Be careful not to hit the face of the ring.

This might not sound amazing but my tach is a later unit because of the ignition I have on my 66 and what the builder did was wrap the green painters tape around the edge of the gauge until the fit was TIGHT. The rest of my gauges are the screw in type.

I also did the tape wrap on my old 69, but I used the stretch type black tape sold to fix radiator hoses--worked perfectly and you couldn't see it at all.

thanks guys, I was leaning toward the tape approach but thought maybe I was missing a better way. FPB111, I considered something like that but it would mean buying new gaskets first, and I'm kind of thrifty (cheap!).
I NEVER want to take those gauges out with the screw brackets again. what were they thinking! thanks again. Don.
