Odd lumpy wear on outer edge of RA1s
Anybody ever experience this? There is a lumpiness to the outer edge of my RA1s. They are definitely at the end of their useful life... at my last autocross the rear got very loose. When I got home I noticed that the left side had a $.25 size chunk missing where the cord is now showing. The tires have had this wear pattern for a while and on both sides of the rear. I crossed them (ie dismounted/remounted) left to right and got the same results on the "new" outer edge. I can't really figure out what would cause the uniform high and low spots. Any ideas?

I have experienced this too. I think it is a sign that the tires are used up. It is probably related to the belt construction.....but the fact that you see cords means stop using them. How much toe in are you running, as that may be a cause too. I am no tire expert, but I have seen this happen to me.
I had just started seeing cords less than the size of a dime on one tire at the end of a DE weekend. All I did was drive home 250 miles on them and it opened up to the size of a half dollar......lucky to make it home.

Yep - normal for RA1's - that's the sign that you need new tires.

What's odd about this is that it started when the tires had plenty of rubber left. Once I swapped the tires on the wheels, the former outside edge smoothed out and the new outside edge got lumpy.

Check your toe in settings.....this may be causing this.
My theory is that the tires are scuffing from too much negative toe. As long as the tires stick, why worry? But it does look like those tires are worn out anyway.

That is a classic sign of shocks and tire balance.
