Carrera 3.2 Mystery Problem

I changed my transmission fluid, adjusted the valves, and replaced bushings on the throttle bell crank shaft at the transmission on my 87 Carrera 3.2 (G50).

When I attempted to drive up my street, the gas pedal started to oscillate as if there was a rotating cog under it. There was also a ticking associated with my forward progress.

The cruise control has never worked and I pulled fuse #7 to disarm it. I checked engine oil and transmission oil to verify they are properly filled. The engine is smoking more than it has before, but this might be from sitting. It does not sound like it ate a valve (due to my adjustment) because it does not make any unusual noise when I let it idle or rev it by hand, so I don't think this new issue is related to the engine. Moreover, would an engine problem cause the accelerator pedal to move in rhythm?

I would really appreciate some advice on this new issue.

Thank you.

Mike

Did you reverse the connections at the bell crank and now the throttle rod to the engine is being bumped by the CV joint on the axel shaft?

  • You have a vacuum leak. I had the same symptoms. It turned out to be the small line to the temp. switch behind the air intake elbow.
  • Second guess. Your valves are adjusted too loose.
  • My Hail-Mary guess? You need to readjust your throttle linakge. It's being over extended.

Steve and Rob:

Thank you both for posting. I am damn anxious to find out what is going on.

Steve: I feel like an idiot, but your guess may very well be right! I cannot check tonight, but tomorrow I will take a look. It all would make sense.

Thank you both for helping out. I'll let you know what the outcome is.

Mike

P.S. I owe you a beer or something if you are right!

This is a photo from my 915 that shows the orientation of the two rods on the bell crank and the CV joint (between the bell crank and the engine throttle plate). Right is toward engine, and left is toward pedal cluster.
As I recall, you can reverse the bell crank on its shaft pretty easily and that would place the throttle rod over the CV joint.

Ignore the black cable, that is the clutch cable disconnected and placed out of the way while preparing for an engine drop.

Steve:

Sure enough, the throttle cable is on the CV Joint. I have the actuator reversed.

I owe you one!

Thank you.

Glad to help. If only more of the problems we face with these cars were that easy.
