Question Removing Console For Shift Bushing Change

I'm in the process of changing out the two front shifter bushings in my '84 Carrera.

I've hit a snag when I got to the fader switch for the speakers, the wiring needs to be disconnected in order to get the cosole out of the way.

Instead of a plug connector from the wiring harness to the back of the switch it appears as though the wires were soldered directly to the back of the fader switch when the car was originally assembled. The wiring is to short to allow me to resolder the connections if they are cut.

I've got a few questions;

A search of the parts listings returns no fader switch information, several pages of other switches but no fader.

An aftermarket Nakamichi stereo with a remote control was installed by the PO, the remote has balance and fade controls.

Do you think that the original, in console, fader switch can just be eliminated?
It looks like our host lists a cover plate,OEM-91155226900, which would cover the fader switch hole but provide holes for the 2 AC switches.

If the switch is a necessity and a new replacement is not available, I suppose that additional lengths of wire could be spliced in.

Your thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
Willie

Question answered

To get the project moving I took a deep breath and cut the 6 wires ... one way or the other it would need to be done no matter what.

The speakers still work, the remote still controls the front to rear fade.

No need to fill the hole, just a temporarily non-functional fader in the console.

Now back to the garage to get the the console out and the new bushings in.

Willie

I was able to get the center console off the shifter completely after holding it up as I unbolted the shifter from the floor. Then lift the shifter out of the hole, tilt the whole mess over to the driver's side and slide the shifter out from underneath the console.
