Unplug the oxygen sensor when setting CO%?
Sorry for the stupid question. I've been reading for an hour and haven't found enough answers to be comfortable.
If I'm checking my CO% on my CIS car, do I unhook the o2 sensor first? Like this? 1. Unhook o2 sensor. 2. Set mixture to about 3 - 3.5% CO. 3. Reconnect o2 sensor and watch it lean out to .5 or something. No, I don't have a cat. I do understand the arguments for leaving the o2 sensor disconnected, but I think I'd like to have it in the loop. Thanks ![]() edit: I just looked in my Haynes and it says to unhook o2 Sensor and get a reading of .4 to .8 (USA) 1.0 to 2.0 (UK) arrrrgh someone enlighten me. Thanks

Hi Shane.
My friend who's also a mechanic has a nice gas tester and some lifts in his shop behind his house. (SWEET) Finding good lift points was a PITA, but worth it. The Haynes manual states .4 to .8 CO% with the oxygen sensor unplugged. (USA) It also states 1.0% to 2.0% (UK), with "air pump disconnected". We just screwed around for a while and finally settled on it at about 1.7-2.0%, with the oxygen sensor disconnected. If I wanna change it, I have easy access to the tester. I also want to see if a richer mixture will cool my engine down. We hooked the oxygen sensor back up, with NO CHANGE. So, I'm assuming that my oxygen sensor is toast (86K miles) or has a bad connection. (the little ceramic connector in the engine bay is broken as well.) Anyone?

the 3.5% setting is if you want to run with the O2 sensor disconnected. set it around 1%, unplugged, if you want to run with the O2 connected. the O2 puts it where it wants anyway, but you tend to feel less of that light repetitive surging from the O2 sensor correcting the mixture if it's set on the lean side initially.

Jeremy, When using the lift get you 4 hockey pucks to help spread the load. One on each corner.
Surely you can find some used ones in your area. LOL.
