Mark,

When she's finally up and around. . .take her dancing.

It will be a night you'll both remember fondly for a long time.

Congrats on the great news.

Mark,

That is great news. We are so happy to hear that she is starting to recover so quickly. I have been telling my wife (who is an ICU nurse) about Beverly's situation. She has indicated that once that breathing tube is removed the recovery process should come right along. We are all praying for the two you you. Stay strong and by her side which I know that you will.

Wow Mark. I just found this thread so sorry I'm late. I will definitely say a prayer for you both. That's great news that she's showing signs of improvement. I really feel for you man. Hospitals are very scary places to have to visit loved ones, especially ICUs. I lost my 10 yr old step brother when I was 12 to a car accident. He was in the ICU as well but unfortunately didn't have the brain activity to sustain life. I still talked to him even though I was scared to death of going in there. I'm glad I did though. I'm sure he heard me. If not from the hospital bed then from wherever he was. It sounds very encouraging for Bev and I'm sure with a devoted man like you in her life, she'll recover in no time. Sounds like you're both pretty lucky. I wish you both the best!

Mark,
What Steve Anderson posted is absolutely correct. Once someone is weaned from the ventilator, and can be extubated, they have crossed the biggest hurdle of a massive trauma. That is also the point where she will probably be transfered from the ICU to the hospital floor. Sounds like things are looking up. Good luck to you both.

Hi folks, another update:

We're back down in Cincinnati and she's now cozy in an ICU there. They run a very tight ship - tighter than in Mansfield - but she's getting the best of care.

Unfortunately we're not seeing more and more signs of returning conciousness. She's actually a little less responsive than she was a couple of days ago, but the neurologists think she's waxing and waning - just getting better one day, slipping the next. They caught pancreastitus before it did any damage, which is common in neuro patients I understand.

So we'll just wait and see. She did open her eyes really wide at least once or twice today. I'm hoping we'll see some more activity as time passes.

Thanks again for your thoughts.

Mark, I just got in from being out of town for the last week and read thru this whole thread! I can't tell you how sorry I am to hear about your partner. It is now 4 p.m. my time and I hope, no, I know, Beverly will get better! When she is able to read or be read to (once you get thru Cannery Row that is) let her read these postings so she knows how many good thoughts are going her way.

Someone mentioned music, and I think that is a great idea. I am a strong beleiver in the power of music for healing. Find a piece of music that she really used to like, and play it at a low level. I'm sure the transfer to Cincinnati must have been a little stressful for a person in her condition, but now that's she's home and can stay put, I'm sure the recovery will continue!

Prayers and best wishes

Mark & Beverly, my thoughts and prayers are with you both. Faith is a powerful force and judging by the responses emanating from this board, this force will surely help in the healing of Beverly. Healing is a slow, meticulous process but one day soon, you will both look back and remember how lucky you are to have survived it and how fortunate you are to have each other. Godspeed!!!
