Just got set set of the re-01's - I musy have looked at the tire rack site 50 times over a couple of weeks agonizing over the decision. They perform (and look) great on my 83 SC.

Good luck!!

form an opinion? instant.
gain useful insight ab tire's overall performance in wet, dry, cold, changing conditions? apparently one day.

Seriously guys, I don't know if there is a "proper" amount of time to test a tire, do you?. I DO know that your chances of getting a full credit on your return is inversely proportional to the miles you put on them. Opinions are subjective- your results may vary. But... in my years of track driving/instructing and God knows how many set of tires I feel that I am marginally qualified to tell whether or not I like a set of tires. Like I said , it is an opinion, and you can take it, leave it, or go $hit in your hat. MY $.02. Cheers.

Yup know its not a porsche but the tires have a weak point. My missus curbed the tires not hard but at 30-40mph and blistered them! no damage to the rubber - barely a scuff, but huge blister.
This has happened twice!!!
I have never had this with any tire before!.
Grip is 'OK' and wear is very quick - I would be lucky to get 20K out of them and this is with rotating them - front to back.
However I am hard on them -fast driver.
I would rate my old Toyo proxies TS1 which I had on the Carrera as MUCH better grip!.

Let's get with the program here.....Michelin Pilot Sports, and Michelin Pilot Sport Cups are not the same tire....The MPSC's that Charles suggested are R Compounds, which you'd be lucky to get 10K out of, and I doubt you've got them on your VW.

I just stumbled across this C&D tire review on the Tire Monopol... er Tire Rack's web site. It gives a nice overview of 11 performance tires. Bottom line: from the best to the worst tire in the dry, there was only a 10% difference in scoring. In the wet, however, there was more variation between the best and the worst.

Enjoy.

The May '08 European Car mag has another non-scientific review list on page 86-88. They do good job explaining the current categories, but the leave you wondering WHICH AA traction rated tires has the best gripping compound.

I finaly jumped in. Was going to order Toyo 888's or Then Hankook S2's in big 245/225/16's.

Toyo's are the bench mark for me (street / DE) but $850! Hankooks are a deal at about $400.

Went with Dunlop's new Direzza Sport Z1 'Star Spec'. They were the only Ultra Performance Street tire on Tire Rack's web site that actualy made a solid refrence to being used on the track for a non R tire. Others would just say they were influnced by or some other vage comment to track duty.

They have a new compound that does not have to heat to much to stick and a ware rating of 200. Thus, should get some real performance and safety benifit on the street.

I think these are targeted at the Street Tire SCCA class and it is their attempt to go after the best in class Yokohama ADVAN Neova AD07.

Plus, the pics of the tread look good to me.

Price was a fair $450. Only had them in stock size 225/205/16's.

Got my fingers crossed.

Really? I figured 245's on 8"s were OK. In your opinion, are 225s to big for 7s?

The tire shop I work with did a lot of 911s at one time.

They also said the 225's would work on front but they don't seem very responsive. This helped me to stay with stock sizes.

Dicsount Tire - Yokohama 420

Great price, great speed/heat ratings, great look, nice tread pattern, 50K mile tires. I run 205-60-15's front and back on my 15/6 Fuchs.

I would highly recommend these for street tires IMHO.

I replaced the aforementioned Dunlops DZ101s with Kuhmo SPTs with much better results. I did try the DZ 101s with a variety of pressures- same results. I seriously doubt they were going to improve with age or wet conditions- Not to mention the fact that I didn't want to stick my long-time trusty retailer with well worn tires and expect a full refund. And yes, I realize tire manufacturers coat there products with preservatives of some kind. Traction was not the issue. For comparison, I swapped the rear SO-2s off my '88 with good results and MPSCs (newly purchased track tires) with stellar results. Both offered much less instability than the DZ101s. For consistancy, I left the same Kuhmos on the front. And yes, according to Tire Rack, you CAN put 245s on a wheel as thin as 7.5". I'm guessing Noah was experiencing the same soft sidewall "twitchiness" I had with the Dunlops and I'm further guessing it did not take him very long to figure out that he did not like them. All in all, the SPTs are fine streets. Like Noah, I don't want to put a ton of $$ into street tires, but there is a minimum level of performance/safety I require. Cheers.
