CIS runaway idle

I would appreciate any suggestions on what to check on my very stock 83 SC with CIS. Two days ago after running nicely for about 6 miles I stopped and noticed the idle was high (about 2100 verse usual 1000). When I pulled away from the light the engine ran away quickly and steadily on it’s own heading for redline while in first gear. I applied brakes for a bit to control and then just switched off the ignition. After inspecting linkage and hoses I decided to drive back home. I would start in 2nd and just let it accelerate on it’s own until I reached proper speed and then turn ignition off, clutch in and then coast. It was the same behavior each time, accelerating on its own steadily. Lots of fun.

It has always started easily (both cold and hot) and had good performance. First problem I have had with CIS in my first year of ownership. Just for complete background, I had just complete value adjustment a few days before, but I had driven it for about 20 miles immediately after that and it started and ran excellent. Sounded great too.

I have access to a fuel pressure gauge if that would help. Can anyone provide suggestions on what I need to check? Thanks

Check and see if your battery is charging properly.

I have an 83. The 8 year old battery died recently taking the alternator with it...or vice versa. Replaced the battery without realizing the alt was still bad. Similar symptoms as yours. Replaced he alternator, all is well.

Check the throttle linkage to see if it has hung up on a vacuum tube or return spring for functionality, and the cruise control cable mount, sometimes they break free.
