Cabriolet Top Best Practices

Kind of like Car Guru was saying, I have to admit that I much prefer the looks of the coupe if compared to a cab when the top is up. I only like the cab looks when the top is down. but then I guess that is the way it should be in the universe, right?

mack6820, why don't you just add the additional snaps to you boot. Don't bother to remove to one already there. Just add what you need that will match the snaps on your frame? They don't cost much, and it would make sure that it was not blowing around.

I just got a 1983 Cabriolet and it came with the windscreen but the "holding part" on the driver side is missing. I try to located on the Porsche CAT or on Pelican and others site without sucess.

If someone got the part number or a photo (make my own bracket), please forward.

I have an 84 Cab and am totally in love with it. My son and I took a 300 mile round trip run to the Jersey Shore on Monday, top down both directions, tunes playing, having a great time. I too unlatch the top prior to unzipping the rear window, and then place a towel over it to avoid chafing, seems to work well. As far as the windscreen that JJ911SC is referring to I did not even know that those were available. Will they fit an 84 model? If so where can I get one?

4. Practice putting the top up quickly. The only iffy part is zipping the window up - be gentle so you don't rip out the zipper stitching. And THAT is not a fun job to replace - think big sewing needles & blood.
   
5. Treat the window with a clear plastic window cleaner every couple of washes.
   
6. Never, repeat, never put the top down in freezing temps. I know this breaks Rule 2 but the plastic window is not cheap to replace.
   
7. If it starts raining lightly, do not pull over to put the top up. Drive faster.
   
8. If your top is manual, always push the metal bar into the fabric as you bring the top down. If it’s not manual, it probably soon will be.
   
9. Wash your top every couple of years & spray with a silicone sealant. 303 if you're obsessed or any silicone canvas preservative will actually do the job.
   
10. Buy sunscreen & keep it in the door pocket.
    
11. Garage the car when not in use.
    
12. Never leave the top down for extended periods of time. Always put it up so the fabric doesn’t remain creased & ‘folded’.
    
13. When in motion, always have the cab boot cover buttoned down or the top can catch air, chafe & wear prematurely. Another big bill to avoid.
    
14. You are the coolest of cool. Keep a pen ready to sign all of the autographs . . .

Sir, I approve wholeheartedly of your rules and your attitude. Of course I should expect no less from one with such a noble name.

The only thing I notice in reading through this entire thread.....was that no one ever mentioned lubing the pivot points in the top mechanism. I keep a little tube of that clear silicone lube and put a bit on my finger and work it into the cross sections where the cross braces are bolted or pinned together. I also put a light coating of that silicone lube on the lock-down mechanism and wheel at the front where it cams the top down. I seems that you would want to keep these X joints lubed to prevent them from binding. Just my opinion for what it's worth.

Take a look at this old thread Wind Deflector, Wind Stop, Windschott...Finally got one! They come up on Ebay form time to time....good luck.

My 87 factory slant came without a windscreen, and it wasnt' listed on the certificate of authenticity or the option codes. Is this something that came with the car, or is it an aftermarket item>>?? I'd be interested if it was something that served a useful function....but I dont see any slots or brackets wehre such an accessory would be mounted.

Not sure it was an option back then (the Authenticity Certificate is in the mail).

The right inside bracket is screwed on the mechanism. I got the bag for it and if my memory is good it is say Porsche on it. I will check tonight for the part number.

At a Cruise Night Wednesday, I talk to a guy that got one on his Mercedes and he mentioned that it is very effective.

I LOVE driving Steve's cabby! Cabs ROCK! They are just soooo dang sexy... Just wish he hadn't lowered the seat because I can barely see out of it. I think he did that on purpose.

Please do post a part number. I was totally unaware that a wind screen even existed for the cabs up to 89. Now I'm on the hunt....

Hide the keys, I don't have too... Pick one of the following reasons;

A. She does not drive standard;

B. She can not reach the pedals;

C. If she could reach it, she could not depress the "foot long" clutch; or

D. All of the above.

If you pick D, you are correct. Mind you that 2 months ago I was not even dreaming of owing one and out of the blue she send me a link to one for sale (a disaster waiting to happened).

I did some research and came upon this one on a Sunday, saw it on the Monday and made a conditional "technical test result" offer and was accepted and she was mine that Monday night. The Compression Test result came in at 160- 170 Psi across the cylinders.

So, thanks to her, my 45 years old dream finally came through (I saw my first 911 back in 1964).

Well it's the usual good news/bad news scenario...

The good news: After going over the frame over and over, I did find the part #... and it is definitely a Porsche item, my windscreen is stamp with, 993 561 179 00 DEZ. I punch it in Pelican 993 catalog and it come up with a "superseded #" message which mentioned that the # has been replace with # 993 561 979 03 DEZ which is available for purchase.

The bad news: Well for a modest $420.65 with a possible surcharge of 20% as it's coming from Deutschland. it could be yours. That is about 2.5% value of what I paid for the whole car.

So at $20 on e-bay, Dave made a very good deal (see old thread refereed on this thread entry #29).

So, I'm half way there, as soon as I can see what the "male" bracket look like, I'll make one.

J.J. you appear to have a later model than the one I purchased which mounts entirely differently. Like this one.


The guy I purchased mine from said it came with his 930. Certainly fits mine like a glove and really makes a difference. Good luck.

Are there areas on the cab that are supposed to be lubed? If so, how often and what has been determined to be the best lubricant?

Also, is it easy to change the seals? I am going to have to change ALL of the seals as they are all old and mostly damaged and dry rotted....
