Just got my first Porsche (sweet!!) - it needs..

1979 911sc with 81k on it If you recognize it I'd love to hear some history on it. It has an old PCA sticker in the window.

It badly needs rear tires before I really open it up and see what it can do. It has 7x16 Fuchs on the back.

Will 245/50 R16 fit my rear wells ? It has Cooper Cobra 225/50ZR16 now but it looks like a bit wider will fit.. ( it has 205/55/16 cobras on the front with a bit of life left in them yet)

Many Thanks!

Welcome! Please add your location to your profile so we know where you are. As Waynesco1 mentioned, our host has written a great book called '101 Projects for your Porsche 911' which is a must. Another good book to get is the Bentley manual. How about some interior shots?

Cheers,

Paul.

When I bought my SC, it had 245-50-16s on the back with 7" rear wheels. It did fit and looked good. 245-45-16 on 8 or 9s may be a better fit. Enjoy your new (to you) car.

Get some good tires, the car will be a lot more fun to drive.

I run Yokohama Advan A048 on 16x7 + 16x8 inch Fuchs. The front size is 205/55-16 the rear is 225/50-16. The fronts weigh 23 pounds and the rear 24 pounds. I have no rubbing issues with a stock ride height and RS flares.

These are really fun but they may be too extreme for some. The wear rating is 60 even in the MH Medium Hard/Hot compound. They are DOT-R competition tires, not for rain. In Southern California, though, they are great

Thanks for the suggestions and quick replies.. good to see others are hooked too

I do have the 101 projects book - fantastic reading! I will be replacing the buzzing fuel pump and the starter which occasionally grinds before starting
( but will keep it stock) . The interior is in wonderful shape - a great rich brown all around. Anyone have any feedback on moving to the 245/50/16 tire in the rear ??

Welcome, the fuel pump may not be an issue it gets loud when your tank is close to empty and gets quieter when full.

way too wide of a tire for a 7 inch wheel.

Always love the more unusual colors...great car.

Your 205/55-16 front and 225/50-16 rear should be the standard sizes. Some people use 245s on 8" wheels--I'd be careful on 7"s. Also keep in mind that a 245/50-16 will have a different circumference and may throw off the handling. Check http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

If you want to "fill" the wheel wells a little better, it looks like it could be lowered a little...

You should lower the car to euro height, it will look a lot better with stock size tires.

Make sure you get V or Z rated tires, as opposed to H rated. It will handle (at any speed) a lot better.

Neat color. Rare. Looks good with that interior.

Welcome nay-boar... (sorry, it was in a movie)

I am north of you in Jackson, TN. What part of AL are you in? If you are close enough, I organize a monthly get together of Porsche folk that we call the MTFR (Mid TN Fun Run). We meet once a month at different locations throughout the area between Nashville and Memphis. We try to alternate each month on Nashville area and Memphis area (closer to that is). I hope you are close enough you could join us. This next one might be ideal depending on where in AL you are, as we will start the day off in Franklin, TN, just up I-65 from Huntsville. We are meeting at 9:30am for breakfast and will go on a fun drive afterward. Shoot me an email and I can add you to the email list we send out notifications on.

On another note, you should look up the SCWDP (use the search function). You have a great car there and hopefully it is in the condition to give you lots of fun miles. Lots to learn here on the board with lots of great people. I have only been here 1 1/2 years. Welcome again!

That's a pretty low mileage car for that old. Congrats. You do know it's all down hill from here, don't you?

Love the color!

As others have mentioned, 225 is about the max for 7" wheels.

I can't believe the fuel pump should ever buzz so I will go ahead and replace it now. I will go ahead and order the 225/50/16 Sumitomo HTRZ for the rears in the morning as they are cheap and in stock at tirerack and upgrade when I have joined PCA and am ready for the track.

The clutch is extreeeemly stiff but engages at the proper distance and all gears engage fine.. are the clutches all this stiff or do I possibly need a new helper spring ?? When I say stiff I mean really stiff but doable once you get the hang of it..

Any tips or tricks for fuel pump removal and refitting ??

Great Car . . .

That is exactly like my first Porsche too. And my buddies from the 'hood' used to call it 'Chicano Brown'.

Yours looks like a very nice car and it will last you a long time with proper care and feeding.

Regarding your clutch, I would start by replacing the helper spring, the clutch cable, then if it doesn't get any easier you might be in for a clutch job. Ask me how I know this...

Neither of the above items are terribly expensive, and it's a good DIY project. You can find "how to" projects on this web site's tech articles, buy a Bentleys and the 101 Projects book from our host and you'll be set.

And remember just about anything you want for your car can be purchased through Pelican Parts. Even if the part you want isn't shown in the catalog, call and ask... More times than none they can provide the part at a fair price and it supports this web site.
