Post Targa bar paint?

Any suggestions on paint (black) for re-doing my targa bar? I have tried a flat plastikote (way too flat - looked like sandpaper) and a satin finish (impossible to get an even finish). I have sanded down and will try one last time. I read Wurths is good stuff but cannot find locally. I bought some black enamel engine paint to touch up a few interior parts and the stuff looks great with a nice even finish. I would love to try this on the bar but it's obviously not designed for exterior exposure. What do you think?

Thanks,
michael

Powdercoat it. Anything else probably won't stand up to the elements.

Get the Wurth paint. You can order it from Larry at http://www.carcareonline.com

Carefully mask off the entire car (removing the top), scuff the bar with some fine sandpaper and apply three light coats of the Wurth. It will look brand new again.

You can keep it that way by applying a coat of wax (I use Blitz wax) to it every time you wax the rest of the car. It's paint on metal, just like the body.

I agree to try the powdercoat route. I carefully repainted mine and took loads of time prepping, but it is getting thin from taking the top on and off. It will need redoing next year. I do take my top off lots but I think something stronger than a home application is needed. My $.02.

I would highly recommend taking the targa bar off for any refinishing. I learned this the hard way. You can easily take it off faster than masking everything. I too tried the satin finish and wasn’t satisfied with the results. I ended up painting it with several coats of flat black. It’s okay, but I think I rather have the original finish. Good luck.....

......but then again, I think the finish on an SC is different from one on a Carrera. Hmmmmmm...........does anyone know if this is true?

I have seen a few Targa's with the exterior bar cover painted to match the body color that look pretty sweet! Just my $.02

I originally tried to remove the targa bar, but after removing the 2 screws up in the rear wheel well (PIA), it did not budge. I not sure it is that easy. It was pretty easy to through a drop cloth over the whole car and cut a small section out for the targa bar and tape up. I am going to try again with a little better paint that the NAPA parts guy recommended. Has a different spray head for a better application.

Not only do you have to remove the retaining nuts that are in the wheel well, but you also have to remove the screw or rivets that hold the cover to the actual support underneath. Mine had screws in it, but I'm not sure if it originally had rivets in it or not. If you peel back the rear seal, you'll be able to see them.

I did mine last year with satin finish (black laquer) and it still looks great. Need to clean it with acetone before you paint it. Tape it off and start sparying. You need to remember when you are spraying that you have to keep it wet and overlap so it looks even when you spray it, otherwise it will look like it was sprayed with a paint can.

Help! My 2nd attempt at painting turned out much better, but some imperfections ended up showing through, although the paint finish looked great. How do you remove the targa cover? I want to sand out all imperfections before my last painting? I found the 2 nuts in the wheelwell, but where are these little screws RADCON is talking about?

Thanks,
Michael

If you look between the targa bar and the weatherstripping on the top of the targa bar, you will see about 4 or 5 little screws. You will probably have to move the weatherstripping over to see them. This is the weatherstripping between the bar and the passanger compartment, not the bar and the window. Post some pics after you're done.
