what is a "long hood"?
I've been navigating thru the board, trying to soak up as much info as possible and see the "long hood" reference on occassion... Stupid question - what is a long hood? I'm guessing its an early model 911... I have a '70T - is this a long hood? Why are they desirable over a model that is not a long hood?
Thanks for indulging the newbie... Jeff in Houston 1970 911T 1956 Chevy P.U. Rat Rod 327/IFS |

Yes, correct. Everything pre-74 is considered a long-hood because the hood is actually longer.
The next generation is often called G-model and has the retractable bumpers that were demanded by the U.S. DOT for the impact laws. Many consider these unsightly and messing with the original classic body lines. The long-hoods are more desireable since many consider them the original body style. There are also fewer because of rust and non-galvanized pannels. Welcome, and have fun, Ingo

Would a picture help?
![]() ![]() They're less desirable in some respects, and more desirable in others. They're more prone to rust, with less power and less room for tires. On the other hand, they're lighter and -- probably more importantly, less common, easily distinguished visually, and more vintage-looking than the 911s that followed. They're becoming prized as 'collectibles' more than as 'affordable performance cars' as they evolve, market-wise. They're becoming more like the 356 that way. Then again, the 911 that most people imagine when you ask them to think about one would probably be a 1974-1989 model. |

I think the one in that picture has some modifications to the rear fender flares - perhaps not the best example of a "typical" early car. . .
![]() The important thing is the nose has the little vents on either side of the hood inboard of the sidemarker light assemblies. This is a giveaway that it's a "long hood". Agree that they're beautiful - classy cars. But yea, most people hear "911" and probably think midyear or perhaps 964 style. . .

Jack, Every time I see a picture of your car I stop and look...ten minutes later I scroll down to see what you wrote. Your car is the P-star of the P-cars, you can do anything with it and it looks great getting rode hard. ![]()

This shot was taken during preparation for the Laguna Niguel Holiday Parade 2007.
![]() ![]() In comparison, my short hood I recently sold. ![]() But one must admit, the classy lines of the long hoods are timeless. ![]() Paul & Judy

Yo Mr soulmining61 -- I see you're in Houston. If you'd like to meet some of the Pelicans in person, many (OK a few) will be at the Houston Police Academy (Rankin Rd & Aldine/Westfield) on Sunday 5/18 for the BMW AutoX, and a Concours on 5/25 at the Woodlands Market Street (behind the Mall) followed by the SCCA autoX at the Gulf Greyhound Park. For more info, visit us at the Tex-Mex Site.
