Speakers in a '72: My solution
The previous owner had speakers in carpet pockets down by your feet. A real hack job. Last year when I replaced the carpet kit, I took them out, as well as the huge and ugly speaker pods that were mounted on the rear parcel shelf. I did not want to modify the door panels to put in speakers and there was not a speaker in the dash, so for a while I had a CD player and no speakers.
I decided to replace the dash speaker so I would at least have some sound. The 4"x6" Sony Xplod speakers came in a set of two so I tried to figure out where to mount the other. Rather than mount it on one side of the car or the other I chose to mount it between the seats. Built a small speaker box today that will be covered with some leftover carpet material with some type of covering over the speaker so it is not visible. Going to mount it with some metal flanges to the seat rail bolts. Not done yet but what do you think? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

well since you asked:
"personally" if I had a 72S I would be thinking of how to improve the value of the car rather than devalue it. After all these early cars (especially an S) are increasing in value every year. I would be using my talents (and apparently you have some) in other ways. I don't think the speaker between the seats is going to do a thing for the fidelity. I would be looking for a stock Frankfurt MONO AM/FM radio and be done with it. Ater 26+ years of playing with P cars and having "good" sound in my RS clone, I still prefer the music made by the motor. Just my 2 cents. |

I understand what you are saying and you make a good point. I chose this method because I can simply unlug the speaker wire, tuck it under the carpet and remove the box and I'm back to stock. The car is unrestored and closer to "driver" condition. Currently the car is without any speakers so a Frankfurt would be useless. The speaker in the dash is hidden and this one can be removed in 1 minute. This is just a simple add-on to make use of the other speaker. Covered in black carpet with a black speaker cover the small box should not be very noticable.

This is a tough question, I have a bone stock 72 also that I do not want to cut or modify to a point where it can't be changed back. I do love the sound of my MFI amd sport exaust but I also love music and at least traffic radio updates on the way to or from work.
The stock radio is in it and stock speaker, and it gets maybe one station, of course not one I care to ever listen to. I'm looking to this as a possibility for speaker mounting : http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/ksearch/PEL_search.cgi?command=show_part_page&please_wait=N&make=POR&model=911M§ion=INTacc&page=34&bookmark=60&part_number=PEL-MOCH-2000 I still have not come up with a good plan for the radio, again I want to keep the stock opening but get a radio that an MP3 player could be plugged into.

tunes are cool
I understand the feelings and passions that some have when it comes to keeping cars completely stock. Especially when they can be restored to pristine condition. But I like to drive my car. And I like music some times when I'm driving it. It seems to me that you've created a pretty simple way to enjoy some tunes without molesting or hacking apart the car in any way that would cause damage. I like your solution!

Here is the solution we have been selling for the last two years. Two Pioneer speakers mounted in a custom frame that copies the dimensions of the original in dash speaker. Good for 1965-1973 911/912. No modifications needed. Sure you can do it yourself with some wood or masonite or something but we tried to price it so it was a better value then spending half your Saturday hammering one out. Lots of good feedback on this forum. Picture below shows original speaker, new speakers, and finished unit. Can be used with Mono or Stereo radio. We have a Blaupunkt San Diego in our 1970 which gives us an ipod input. No mods needed and still have good loud music with the widows open and the aftermarket exhaust howling. Radio and speakers in stock. $95 for the speaker and $129 for the radio.

Ver nice Charles.
$95 is not much to save a pair of door pockets (which is where most speakers went in the 70's. And sounded like crap). |

A Moch1 under dash enclosure paired with a Clover rear shelf enclosure = decent sound without modifying nor cutting up your stock interior. Both are often listed on Pelican - there's a Clover currently listed.

I have stock size little door high quality speakers and a modest sized flat Kenwood subwoofer behind my passenger seat on the floor and it sounds great (in 81SC). The kenwood has its own amp. It is what I plan to do with my 69E. Nice balanced sound with respect to frequency and I can still enjoy the engine 162435 162435.

Finished the project and I'm really happy with it. Covered the box with the carpet material and found that its thin enough that it doesn't muffle the sound at all, so I didn't bother to cut out an opening and use speaker cloth. Very inconspicuous if you ask me. Between this and another installed in the dash I have some decent sound. And like I said, it comes out super easy if I choose by removing two rear seat rail bolts.

Can I run 89 Octane in my 2.4?
My 1973.5T/CIS is not a daily driver, nor can I say a real gas guzzler, but for as l long as I have owned 911's I always ran 93 octane so I have to wonder what changing to 89 would do besides save a few bucks each month.
I recall several threads on this subject over the years, but I'll raise the question again as gas prices soar through the ceiling. Whats a few octane numbers going to matter, heh? Bob |

Nice approach. I like the inconspicuous look and the 1 minute return to stock.
I suppose there are other locations , speakers, sizes, etc etc that can produce better sound, but if you enjoy it and it doesn't permanently mess up the value of the car, then I think you've succeeded.

I was thinking of building a "box" that goes in the rear seats like that luggage cubby thing Porsche made as an option for a while. Then I could put a worthwhile sound system in there, and have it look "stock" (or at least look like it has storage cubbies, and not a pimpin' stereo). Probably would only do this if you have a roll bar and don't use the rear seats.

I'm a fan of running an ipod directly into an amp. No head unit needed. If you have the Microsoft Zune you can even get radio reception.

Now you could probably fashion an uber cool cup-holder on top of that to hold a gallon of slurpee.
![]() Actually, I think you did great getting some sound while still maintaining the cars integrity. ![]()
