Testing a catalytic converter
I have a 26 year old converter in a box and was thinking about intalling it. Is there an obvious way to test it to see if it's any good?
It has no rattles, dirt falling out, and the mesh screen is intact and clear. It does feel heavy (but I don't have anything to compare it to) and thuds more than bangs when hit with something solid. Any ideas?

If there no obvious sign of damage I think the only way is to put it on, drive for a while, and then have your car sniffed.
Of course converter technology has come along in 26yr and I am certain the ones being produced today are better. Does your car still need a cat? |

Fortunately my location doesn't search for a cat yet. I mostly am looking to try out different sounds with my muffler, and see how the performance changes. I just didn't want to go through the effort if there was an easy wasy to know if it was a bad cat. I think I'll give it a shot and see what comes of it.
