Fuchs 9x16 and 225 tires

Hi all,

What is your experience for the rear wheel combination 9x16 fuchs with bridgestone S02 225/50 x 16 tires?

According to the local tire shops, 245/45 is the recommended size...

How is the behaviour of the car on 225/50 and 9 x 16's?

Are there clearing issues with 245/45 and 9 x 16's? Is the car more understeering?

Your input will be very appreciated.

Thx,

André

a 225 would be very narrow on a 9in wheel.

on a 9inch I would go 245, or 255.

the issue you need to check is oil line clearance on the passenger side, and fender lip clearance -if offset is not quite right.

No problems with 9" Fuchs with 245-16 tires on SC/RS rear flares. 225's are doable but probably not ideal. Oil lines, fender lips or other interference issues are not applicable with the above sizes unless the ride height is adjusted so the vehicle scrapes the ground.

Look in the archives for a history of the same question.

Above is about the best pic I can find.

225/50/16 Goodyear Eagle F1's fitted for about a year and did really well. They seemed to have about the same tread width as the RS2 245's I have fitted since.

Hi Andre, I also have 225 on my 85 Targa and so far I have had no issues. However I will change to 245 once this ones are down in thread. Here is a pic:

Hope this helps...

Thanks for the pics.

Ipsalsaman,

Why do you want to switch to 245? Is it just the look, or do you have complaints about the ride/handling?

I can see that the side walls are not square...

Jevvy,

I will try to compare the footprint between different brands...
Could you give any comments regarding the side walls?

My problem is that in Belgium only 225 is accepted by the yearly inspection authority...

I can keep my cookie cutters for the yearly inspection...and buy 245 rims...but it would be nice to have one set without problems...

Andre' check the tire manufactures allowable rim width for the 225's you may find that they do not recommend 225 on a 9" rim.

I've been running 225s on my 9" rears for years without issue. This car mainly sees track duty. During that time, I've either run Kumho VictoRacers, Yoko Advans or Yoko A008s. I would like to mount 245s, but the "experts" keep telling me they would rob power from my 2.4ltr motor. I'd like a bit more rear grip, however.

Andre, I don't really have a problem with the tires at all and handling is fine. I just want a wider tire that is all. About the sidewalls, I remember when I was in Germany that some Porsche's had wide tires which had a little of a round look in the sidewalls. It did not seem that the TUV had any issues with that, but then again I did not had to worry about that. I guessing you have to go thru a TUV like inspection. I would just swap tires like you stated, just for the inspection.

I could only find 1 tire manufacurer w/ only 1 tire line that lists a 9" wheel as being in the design range for a 225/50x16 tire, Dunlop Direzza.

All the others have design wheel widths of 6 - 8"

I wouldn't use a tire on a wheel outside the design parameters,

Hey Andre- if you have to buy new tires, why not just go with the 245 size? It fits just fine on a 78-89 car, it's the right size for that rim and they both cost about the same. Never saw a car come out of the Porsche factory with 16x9 Fuchs that had a 225, only the 245/45.
