proper procedure for checking if an engine turns by hand?
I am going to look at a 911 that has sat for a number of years and the owner doesn't know much at all about the car. What is the proper procedure for checking if the engine is frozen or ok? I know in the 944 water cooled world I would just stick a 24mm socket on the crank pulley nut but what is to be done on the 911? Thanks in advance.

Clockwise......
You should only turn it clockwise due to the timing chains. If it sat real long, pull plugs, squirt some oil in there.

You can try to turn it with the fan nut. If the belt slips, grab it with your other hand and pinch it. If the motor doesn't turn then, you might want to start with the usual steps to revive a stuck motor. There is a ton of info in the archives about this.
