SC runs rough
details:
79SC 3.0 CIS. Parked the car last fall. Pulled the engine to replace starter, valve covers etc. Replaced it hooked everything up. Turned the engine over without fuel or spark to build oil pressure. replaced fuel pump relay and ignition source. Took air filter off turned on ignition lifted flapper for 4 seconds. Car started but runs rough and dies. It also blows oil big time. It has blown oil in the past if it sat for awhile but usually clears up. Any thoughts why it might run rough?

CIS Trouble shooting......
Mike,
Before you do any further trouble shooting, I would suggest that you drain your old gas (specially if it was not treated before storage). Gasoline deteriorates over time and could cause starting or running problem. After putting fresh gasoline and you're still having problem, then proceed to CIS trouble shooting. Good luck. Tony |

Is your interior light working ? If not, check out the fuse for it (and the clock I think), it powers the oxygen sensor and can make it run like crap...

I'm giving this thread another bump.
one of my friends has a similar problem with his 911SC. I'm betting on a vacuum leak, but I won't know until we go through it. Here's what I'm bringing with me to look: timing light, starting fluid to spray around the intake manifolds, and a reel of clear flexible tubing that I use to bleed brakes. The tubing is cut at about a 3' length, then you stick one end in your ear and use the other end to poke around and see if you can hear a vacuum leak. There is a huge intimidating amount of vacuum crap in the engine compartment of the 911SC, and I'm really thinking that something in there is leaking. Mike, you also might want to make sure that gas is flowing into and back out of the fuel filter and fuel accumulator. You might want to let it run awhile (ignition key on, not talking about the air flow plate) to eliminate air bubbles. Last edited by rusnak; 05-29-2008 at 02:10 PM.. |

Back to the basics; (1) Tend to the gasoline as already mentioned, and (2) pull the spark plugs to determine if the poor running is one cylinder or more. SCs do not need the fuel system "primed" following engine install, they will start perfectly following a short period of cranking.
Ridiculous question - how much oil did you put in the car?

9 qts of oil. I tapped on all of the injectors and it fired up and runs a little rough but doesn't die. I didn't hink it was going to sit so long so I didn't put stabil in it. How do I drain the tank?
And, at 4 bucks a gallon can I treat it or maybe save it for the lawn mower? Blowing oil is reduced. Thanks guys.

In CA there would be little or no need to add stabilizer (especially if the car was parked with a full tank), in MN that might be completely different. I have to defer to those in your area who are well-versed in this issue!
9 quarts should be OK!
