Porsche Crest New Member here from Europe

Hi all,

My name is Jack and I come frome Slovenia (small country). Well I read this forum for short time now and it is pleasure to read all helpfull threads....

Well I bought for my father 60 birthsday (which is next week) his dream car Porsche 911 sc 1980 coupe with sunroof. Car is original from MIAMI, but someone imported it to Europe, payed taxes and then change his mind decided to sell the car . For me it was oportunity and I bought it. I have now car for 14 days and saw some problems.

First problem was that car had to much oil in it I mean 4.5l oil. Other wise oil is new, which is good, but car smoke A LOT,( like a train). Car had so much oil, that it draind through exhaust like water. But now car at idle doesnt smok any more, just when you press a gas padle. ( car is at friends mom garage that my father doesnt see it - so I couldnt do any mayor mechanic job).
But what I am woriesd about is , that when you press a gas padle and still smoke, this smoke come through dash board (vents) and that is not good.

I also orderd repair manual book, but I still didnt get it, so here is my question. Which pipe is broken, that gas smoke come through vents.

Thank you for listening, and also sorry for my bad English language.

Best regards
Jack

Check the oil at the dipstick.....ONLY when warm and on a flat surface while running. Proper oil height is BELOW the midmark.

Run the car until the temp gauge is ABOVE the mid mark. If the oil level is right....go and drive the piss out of it. You need to burn off the ingested oil and what is left in the heat exchangers and exhaust. Drive it at night if the smoke is an issue.

welcome!

I'm not sure I understand your question.

Is it oil smoke (dark and with a distinct oil burning smell) that is coming through the dash or is it gas that's burning or evaporating off the engine (a totally different smell and a white smoke, but not much smoke because it's on fire!)

If it is oil smoke it is probably coming from the heat exhangers. if they are rusty or depending upon the location of the leak, they can fill with oil and the smoke comes through the heating system into the cabin.

If it is gas burning, then don't start the car again until you've found the leaking fuel line and fixed it!

It is oil smoke (blue) and smell like burning oil. So which part should I change, to prevent the smoke in cabin. If its possible post pic from manual that I can see which pipe... Thank you guys for help. I really appreciate. I am lost without manual book. But I would really like to repair this pipe, so when I give the car to my father, he could drive it without gas mask, lool.

oil smoke through the vents? Must come through the heat exchangers, not? Rustholes in the heat exchangers, oil found a way inside?
Or maybe the heater hoses not connected properly, or they may have gone bad?
Just guessing here.
Others will chime in.

Open/rusted butterfly(s) on the heat exchanger may be the source of the oil smoke.

Good luck,

Gerry

I think there is a strong possibility that you have a rusty heat exchanger. This is how you get warm (heated) air into the cabin, and if it is smoking as bad as you say, that smokey exhaust could easily enter the cabin if your heat exchangers are bad.

To remedy the smoke (if it's from too much oil) just drive it and get it plenty hot.

By the way, if it's from Miami, you better check the smugglers box and the headliner

Same thing happened to me. Just drive it, with the windows open until the excess oil is burned off the exhaust and heat exchangers. Better yet, open the sunroof! Someone overfilled the oil and so if was blown into the air intake and then over the top of the motor where it drained onto the exhaust. It will dry out with heat and use. If you get underneath the car you can see what exhaust parts are covered with oil. You could disassemble the exhaust and steam clean it but it is easier to drive it. Joe Bob has a good point. If pollution police are watching, drive it at night. Remember, if it doesn't smell like hot oil it's not a Porsche!

If the butterflys are not obviously rusted, spray a good amount of WD-40 on
them while someone GENTLY pulls up & pushes down on the heater levers between the seats.

I assume that you do not have the Auto Heat option.

Do not force the levers as that might damage the cables.

Once the butterflys close and open easily, you might want to disconnect clean/lubricate/grease the inside of the cables, as these cables are very prone to absorbing road crud.

Let us know how you do.

Best,

Gerry

Aloha Jack

Those butterfly valves are located under the car, Going from the engine exhaust forward, beside the trans, to the body. It helps to have the car on a hoist or jacked up and on jack stands to get a look at them. Once you get the excess oil burned out of the exhaust system the smoke and smell may go away.
Or if it continues there may be an oil leak that needs to be addressed. Good luck with it.

Welcome to the forum, Keep us posted how it goes. Good on you for doing this for your dad!!

Cheers Richard

Problem is that car is not registered yet, because my father is owner, so I can not register car for road yet. I drove car maybe 200m in one old country road (makedam with holes) to see how cars go (very slow of course). but I was excited, hehe.
Gearbox is ok, clutch is..well I dont know, it grabs immediatly, I dont know if this is normal or not. Brakes are not so good, pads are worn... problem is also that windows sometimes work sometimes don t. and the sunroof is without motor, so while I am driving, I can not have open windows to go smoke out...
I know there are some problems, but I am sure we will solve all those bugs and have nice porsche.

Will post picture as soon as I take photos.

in the 1960s there was an optional heater which used gasoline located in that box. Later it was used for air conditioner parts.

Sorry BadBoy - just kidding around.

Miami was a hot spot for hot cars and drugs in the early 80's

BTW - all you guys have great English compared to most of us.
