Is the "Marchal Alternator Nut" the washer between the alternator and fan?
In taking out my alternator to have it fixed, I seem to have lost the washer that sits between the alternator and the fan. Does anyone know if the part labeled,
Marchal Alternator Nut (1982-1989) 928-603-904-00-M262 is the right thing? when I put the fan back on the spindle, it is catching on something. I've lined the fan up using the woodruff key, but it feels/sounds like it is sitting too close to the alternator as is getting stuck on something and won't turn more than an inch or so. If I lift the fun up a little, it spins freely, so i think I am missing a washer. Is this part what I am missing? Thanks

I found that part number in the 928 section of PET, for 928's thru 1983. It lists as "set of fastening parts" and points to the nut on the end of the alternator shaft. There is no indication what the "fastening parts" are, however. I don't find that elusive washer you seek, in either the 911 or the 928 PET sections.
Good luck. I suppose that an appropriately-sized washer (or two or ...) would work in place of the OEM part. |

I don't see it in the PET either. There is a washer there because I have my assembly apart. It is ribbed on the back (alternator side) and flat on the fan side. Gold anodized in color. There is a picture of the kit here http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/911M/POR_911M_ENGmis_pg3.htm
The washer in question is furthest right.

Thanks guys. Went back to the alternator repair shop and they had it. While testing the alternator, the guy had put the washer aside for "safe keeping", then forgot to put it back on. He was very apologetic and at least I don't have to play the part number lottery now.
It is strange that it is not listed in PET, though the piece I got back looks very much like the stepped washer shown in the photo on Pelican for part number 928-603-904-00 which does appear in the '87-'89 911 PET as the "set of fastening parts" that Brian mentions, though there is only one arrow and it points to the nut. Inaccurate labeling from Porsche? Wouldn't be the first time ![]()
