I just bought a 911.

Well I am now back to being a owner of a 911. I pulled the trigger on a 89 964 C4. I've been lurking here for a bunch of years. I owned a 914 also at one time. Too small for me, and I sold it to get some stuff for my X wife. Now she is gone, and its time for a sports car again.

I have been looking for about 3 months. I’ve test drove a lot of cars. I kept pictures of the ones I really looked into. It’s been a great chance to see what is out there.

Anyway here is some pictures of her. I just found out about this car on Tuesday, and I’m finishing the paperwork tonight after work. I don’t even know what color she is by the paint code! She has some stuff for me to fix, the sunroof most notably isn’t working. The motor turns but she doesn’t open. I’ll have to look into that. She has a few blemishes. I’m going to have to get some other wheels than those type 97’s. I think some Cups, or some Fuchs. She is tight through. Pulls like a train. All the leakdowns are good. Leaks some oil, but nothing major. I listened for the Clunk from the flywheel. I didn’t hear anything. I also looked but can’t tell if the Cylinders got the gasket treatment. I couldn’t tell but it doesn’t leak more than a drop or two a day.

Here are some of the rides I didn’t get. All were very cool though:

I just loved the color. Had other issues. Some dude in Brazil owns it now

Targa. I liked it. I left it. Someday, I’ll get the Targa.

A 91 C4. It was a great car. At a great price. For someone else.

Possibly the best car I looked at that had no heat, no ac, Clean enough engine bay to eat from. I didn’t want a track car though.

996 I looked at. Someday.

A '98 964?

Very nice though. You can look forward to a few months of opening the garage door at night just to look at it with the "I can't believe it's mine!" thought running through your head.

Congratulations!

Holy dyslexia, Its a 89 of course. I'll fix it!

Yeah I am kinda shocked. Its been so long.

Anyone with any experience in modifying the Sport seats? I want to change the bottom to a more flat setup, and pull the wings out.

Oh No don't do that! Do you know how desirable those seats are? You can sell those and place Stock Seats and have a few bucks for gas

Beautiful car. Just beautiful.

I'll be next to tell you not to mess w/ the s. seats. Trade/sell them and get wider seats, have a nice chunk of change left.

And, sadly, don't think you can put Fuchs on that car. Offset is wrong.

Sorry.

Great looking car and if I can say excellent choice too!
the 964's are the first series of next generation all new technology with real world power,
braking, and ergonomic controls with reliable heat and a/c.
I wouldn't even think of driving one of my earlier cars day to day ,just because it doesn't make sense unless you have to.
These cars have been greatly devalued and at some point will be recognized as overlooked
for the more expensive and not all that more reliable 993's and subsequent 996's.
Again ,good looker ..enjoy it! Bert

Congrats! I am envious. I posted a thread only a couple of days ago on my lust for a 964. Great model I believe and I am hoping to have the means for one myself soon. Good luck with it!

Well done, looks like a great ride! I too would ditch the design 90s. Cup1s look great on 964s. I would also get it lowered.

The "89 C4 is a one year only car (for the USA).

It doesn't have the dual mass flywheel so there is no "clunk" to watch out for.

First thing is to check the DME relay date and replace it if more than 5 years old.

Check the ABS relays, if dated before 1990 replace them as they are a potential espensive problem.
If the pump relay sticks the ABS can continuously run, burning out the pump, wiring and feed pipe. This was a Porsche service action in the 90s.

Make sure the distributor drive belt has been changed and vent kit installed.

The rear spoiler cable has a rubber sleeve to prevent water entry, it cracks and should be replaced.

Full brake/clutch/ABS/4wd actuators fluid change should be done if it hasn't been carried recently (within last two years).

Front diff seal (input shaft seal) can leak.

Clutch flexible hose can leak.

Front oil cooler fan and ac condensor fan resistors fail: the ac one fails because battery vent hose is directly above it.

Good inspection and maitenance keeps them going.
