'86 Carrera: Mystery wires

I was working on my father's 86 Carrera last weekend... changed the 02 sensor and head temperature sensor.

While I was working away, I came across these two "mystery" wires. They come out of a wire bundle that passes from the firewall to the rear fuse panel, on the left side of the engine compartment.

As you can see, these two wires come out of the "bundle" at the same place that a few brown ground wires come out.

Anyone know where these are supposed to go? I couldn't find anything obvious, and as far as I know, all the emission controls are present & accounted for.

Thanks!

In the Bentley, wiring diagram 970-27

5 "boxes" down it shows "NTC II" getting a red/black from the DME

What is the "NTC II", and could these be the wires that are supposed to go to it?

An NTC sensor is a "negative temperature coefficient" sensor. I.e., a temp sensor were as temp goes up, resistance goes down. It tells the ECU what the engine temp is, so the ECU can make adjustments accordingly (richen when cold, etc.) I forget what NTC II is on a Carrera, but I think it's cylinder head temp.

That's not what those wires are. Your car would run terribly (if at all) with the sensor not connected.

Jake, I've got an '86 Euro version Carrera and I just looked at my engine compartment on the driver side and didn't see those wires. However, I do have a large blue wire that I can't identify! I think it might have been an audio hookup in another time of my car's life. Let me know when you get an answer on those two wires. Looks like a brown/white and red.

BTW, I also just replaced the O2 and the HTS. My biggest problem was getting the damn rubber grommets in place around the Head Temp Sensor plug wire and the other two wires that go thru the grommet. Vaseline solved it!

I am almost positive those are for the rear wiper. I did a similar quest for this info a few years back. My '86 has the same loose wires too, and no wiper to hook them up to.

I seem to recall seeing the same thing on my '88. I'll look again.

Red and brown... power and ground. Rear wiper or rear euro fog light? (though I think the fog wiring is usually back by the rear fuse panel?)

They're not connected to anything on my car either. Never have been since I first bought it, before I started taking everything off the car........
