What is the trick to remove the steering column on an SWB 911?
I am restoring the trunk in my '67 and for the life of me cannot figure out how to remove the steering column and support bar. I did manage to move it enough to get my work done but what a PITA!
There is a big clamp just behind the turn signal/wiper switches and then a retaining pin/washer under that...which have all been removed. Also removed the hardware holding the support in the trunk as well as the interim steering rod that goes to the steering rack. I can get all sorts of movement but the dang thing won't come out. Thoughts, ideas?

Its too early, my mind is not in the gutter...yet...
I can get the support piece to move within that rubber bushing...its tight but it moves. I can also see that it would need to be remove from the trunk. However, the back part of the turn signal switch housing does not want to come off. It will slide about 1/2 way off but won't go the rest of the way. Damn thing. If I weren't restoring it to keep, it would have met the sawzall by now!

You're probably hung up on the ignition switch lock bar for the steering column? You have to unbolt that from the column and that usually entails removing the ignition switch from the dashboard. Ignition switch has shear bolts (bolts that the heads break off when they're adequately tightened to make them tamper-proof) that must come out in order to remove the switch. I cut slots in the heads to back them out with a flathead screwdriver.
I'm referring to the procedure for my '87, so your 20 yr. senior car may be different.

Kevin,
The early cars do not have the steering column lock. I have the ignition switch out of the car so that is not an issue. Wierd though, the column has the provision for the steering column lock even though it was not supplied with one.
