Steering makes noise
Hi all,
My 1980 911SC's steering recently sometimes making noise likes steering fluid is low. As I know this car is not the latest model which has power steering. Anyone has the experienced to help me determine the problem before I bring this to the shop. Thanks, KSP

If your noise is a scraping sound coming from the steering wheel area, the usual culprit is the horn contact. Wheel removal is necessary to check/grease the contact.

Thanks for the answer. But I don't think so because the it's not come from the horn contact. I think it comes from somewhere in lower parts of steering wheel column. It happened sometimes when driving. Any thoughts?

Rack internals lack grease and / or need new pinion shaft bearings, or steering shaft bearing in the smuggler's box is toast. Search Tim Hancock and steering rack, and you'll come up with useful stuff.
Though those things should also manifest themselves as sticky steering and excessive on-center play.

One other thought before you look deeper into the car--my 83 made a scraping noise when turning and I applied a little WD 40 between the gap in the steering column housing that rests against the turn signal...
