Rear Seat Backs - Please Excuse An Elementary Question

I have a decent library of Porsche books but can't seem to find anything relating to what holds the rear seat backs up. I have an early '65 coupe with no straps or whatever which might be a clue for these seat backs.

Will someone please take pity on a lost soul and offer some advice on how this feat is performed?

Many thanks...............

My '68 had metal buttons attached to leather straps. You can see one near the lower right corner of this photo:

Somewhere along the line it looks like the straps that hold the seat backs were removed. Look at the picture posted by 1968Cayman and that's what you should have. The metal "buttons" are actually the female part of button snaps. The mating male part may still be installed on your car. They are found on the backside (toward the rear window) of the bolster that runs along the top of the rear package tray. You might see them if you look through the rear windshield .

I'm sure you can buy replacements or can easily have them made up by any upholsterer. Pretty simple technology, even in 1965

And if a non-concours solution is okay, go to Michaels and buy a bag of leather scrap and a snap kit. I've seen cases where two straps were used and cases where the snap was screwed to the edge of the rear deck. I don't know which is correct. Either way, if you just want the seat to stay up it's an easy fix. The hardest part is prying the tiny nails out of the seats.

BTW, I've made several sets of these and I think it's better to make them longer than what's shown on the diagram.

My 80 SC has the leathers straps on both the seat backs and the firewall, with buttons. It lets the seat back float about 3 inches as you drive, and if I really get on the brakes, the snaps let go and the backs fall down.

Many thanks to all who have kindly responded. My car has the snaps on the bolster but is missing the straps and there is no indication in the present upholstery of how they were held to the seat backs so the photo is a big help. Apparently the seat back frame is wood so nails could be used. Thanks again.

If you lift the bead that's sewn to the seat-back carpet you may find the old nails are still there.

Seat retention straps

Bob at APPBIZ here
We sell these staps in several lengths
Ours are embossed on the edges just like the factory ones, we even include some little uphostery nails for attachment. Pelican stocks several of the lengths
