Dumb Newbie Question

Everyone I am new to the line and I want ot give a shout out. I am in the middle of a couple of projectes on my 87 911 and so for the past week i have been absorbed with reading all of the past threads in different areas. What a great site. Having read up, I have a couple of questions:

1. Everyone speaks to this POS 105 believe rust preventive application to be used on metal. I haave looked all over this site and I cannot find its real name or source. I got in my car and tried to go to hardware stores trying to get it and no one knew what I was talking about. Can someone tell me where I can get this product because I want to apply it in some areas before I paint them, like my drums and rotors.

2. Related, a couple of guys used Wurth paint (Silver) to paint their drums and rotors. Where do I get that paint from

3. There is a forum meber who pwder coarts brakes for some of the forum members. I want to get that done but I want someone who knows the 911 brakes. Can you guys direct me to that forum member

Thank you

Welcome aboard Srwilliams. You might find some of your product needs at eastwood.com. I have seen caliper coating and restoration products in there catalog.

Hi and welcome aboard!

#1- I believe you're referring to POR 15 which I've used before, but certainly not on brake rotors.

#2 - Painting the rotors would be a REALLY bad idea imo. Goes without saying that you don't want paint where the brake pads contact the rotors, and even in the other areas, it would only impede heat dissipation imo, so I wouldn't go there. I had a lot of stuff replated (gold cadmium as was OEM) but my 930 rotors wouldn't fit in the plater's tumbler, so he use yellow zinc chromate on them.

#3 - I used the two part paint sold here on Pelican (G2 is it?) on mine several years ago, and it's held up very well on my 930 calipers, and you can't powder coat them without removing the seals, etc. (due to the baking of the PC)...something to consider.

Here's a pic, the springplates are gold cadmium, the rotors are yellow zinc, and the calipers and torsion bar covers are the G2 paint. Of course, they don't stay like my pic, but mine have held up VERY well after several years:

Hope this helps...

Eric Shea is the one you are looking for. Don't know his user name, but his full name has been posted many times. Just do simple search using the full name.

All Wurth products are available thru Pelican parts. POR 15 is most easily purchased on the Net.

Porsche Crest POR vs POS

You can use POR on a POS, but you would not want to reverse it.

I sourced mine locally (the guy I had sandblast my parts carried it), but Milt is spot on...Google "POR 15" and you'll find sources. You REALLY don't want to POR 15 your rotors, but it's your car to do as you wish

You are so correct. I do not intend to POR and paint the rotors. I mispoke. From what I read, guys treat the drums and that part of the rotor that is not touched by the brakes,.

If I am off with this please let me know

I will try to Gooogle POR 15.

Is shea the one who does the powdercoating

SRWilliams -

It's OK to powdercoat the rotors, we do it all the time, especially with the vented ones. Then take them down to a brake shop and have them lightly turned. That takes the powder coating off the brake surface (it's bad on the surface - I'm sure you know that) but leaves it on everywhere else.

It's a great look. Quite a few rotors are coming with cad coating now though that I also think looks terrific and doesn't cost me any money!

Regarding POR-15. I've used it and hate the stuff. Not a fan at all. I can assure you though that if you follow the directions it is on permanently. You can buy it from most automotive paint stores.

I'm still going to respectfully disagree due to the fact that the PC would impede heat dissipation capabilities from the rest of the rotor (I think of the whole rotor as a heat sink). If you have Fuchs, the only part of the rotor that is visible "is" where the pads come in contact (that you suggest removing the PC) so you'll gain nothing "appearance wise" and degrade your braking capabilities in the process. Someone please correct me if my logic is incorrect !!! Although my pic shows "bling bling brake jewelry", it's virtually all hidden behind the Fuchs...other wheels might be a different matter, but that's my .02 worth...
