On the Stoddard sheets I have it looks like it came from a 1966. It shows engine # 907001 to 909000 produced as engine type 901/5. It could have been a 67 as well, depending on when they switched over MY production.

This is a ‘normal’ 911, no T, E or S.
This was fitted to all the ‘later’ MY ‘66 911 cars and the MY’67 911 built in late (June-December) 1966. I don’t think any were built in calendar year 1967. The ‘early MY ’66 911 type 911/01 had Solex carburetors. I think there were about 1970 MY ’66 built July-December 1965 and about 4709 built January to sometime early 1966. I don’t know the transition date, VIN number or even if there was an absolute cut-off. There may have been a period where both 901/01 and 901/05 engines were installed. There appears to be about 1029 type 901/05 engines installed in MY ’66 chassis through June 1966. There appears to be about 2149 type 901/05 engines installed in ’67 chassis from July 1966 to December 1966. There don’t appear to be any installed after January 1967 as the changeover to the type 901/06 was complete. The significant difference between type 901/01 and 901/05 are the change from Solex to Weber carburetors. The camshafts remained the same. With the impending introduction of the 911S type 901/02 engine, the 901/05 was too close in power and in some cases would out-perform the 911S 901/02. Porsche’s short-term solution was to weld a ‘restrictor’ ring into the outlet of the heat exchangers. The introduction of the ‘normal’ 911 cam with the 901/06 (same as 911E) solved the issue. The type 901/06 only significantly differs from the 901/05 with the change in camshafts. I am looking at relatively unmolested (I think about 90K) type 901/05, engine number *907919*. The “*” are actually 5-point stars. It is missing the carbs, has a later muffler and the tin is rusted off the (probably original) heat exchangers. I haven’t checked the cams yet. I’ll be interested to see the outlet of the heat exchanger pipes. Interestingly I think I rebuilt (replaced syncros bearings and installed update input shaft) the matching transmission in late ’68 or early ’68. It is ‘like new’ internally. This stuff never seems to go away. Best, Grady
