How do you seperate alternator from fan housing?

It's been so long since I had the alt & fan housing out of my car that I don't remember if I seperated the two. Now working on my replacement engine and cannot seperate the fan housing & altenator. Tried tapping on the back side and broke off a piece of the alum casting on the alt which fell down into the alternator and is now rattleing around

Looks like taking the alt in to be bench tested and rebuilt as necessary is no longer an "option"

Need to seperate to get fan housing powder coated. Any tips....not doing so good on my own. Should I just let the alt shop deal with it?

BTW, the Alt is a Bosch Valeo Mfg in France unit believed to be orig - engine has 58k on it. (Nope - its a remanufactured unit)

If you dont care about the alternator, like i didnt, soak the housing and alternator in liquid wrench. Wait 10 minutes then grab the housing, and slam it down on the concrete sidewalk so the alternator shaft will hit from the back side of the housing/alternator. Be careful though, you can crack the magnesium fan housing if your not careful. My alternator was wearing out, so thats why i chose this method. I replaced it with a refurb paris rhone alternator of ebay, and ordered a valeo voltage regulator and slapped it on the paris rhone, no problems since, year went by so far. I've heard that paris rhone alternator's vr's were buggy so thats why i got the valeo regulator.

EDIT: This is, of course, after u remove the alternator nuts that hold the alternator to the housing... hehehe...

I have done this MANY times on two different fan housings.

The easiest and safest way is to let gravity to do the work. Tapping sometimes works, but using gravity works better.

Check out that link posted by MBAtarga.

Thanks guys....did the search and found this: John Walker is a genius!

Got it seperated in less than 1 minute!

jeeze, somebody's still pounding on the studs! let gravity and inertia work for you. fold a shop rag and lay it on the concrete. take the housing, fan facing down, and rap the edge on the rag a couple of times, turn it 180° and rap the other side. pretty soon the alternator will be out.

Ain't it great when a plan comes together.

When I removed my alternator to have it rebuilt I tapped on the studs for a few seconds. I set the entire unit down on my workbench to get rid of one beer and get a cold beer. When I picked up the fan housing the alternator almost fell out. Done!
