Ok, now I have 3.6 conversion AIR CONDITIONING questions...!

Guys - I need 3.6 conversion info!

I'm trying to ascertain whether or not the earlier engine mount (like from the SC, for instance ) can used with a 964 transplant - and if so, can A/C function be retained? I realise the the 964 compressor mount would have to come off if the earlier engine mount could be used...

Anyone know?

THANKS!

ok, so the engine carrier, console and A/C compressor mount will all bolt up just fine, however the 3.2-era compressor is too long and will not mount (hits the manifold.

This is without thinking too much about the pulley situation, on the assumption that a single pulley conversion will tidy things up down there...

Comments?

Anyone care to measure a 964/993 compressor for me? Say, center of pulley to back of housing?

Thanks.

I don't understand the question, why not use the stock 964/993 console w/ AC mount and stock 964/993 AC compressor?

You can then use either the stock 3 sheeve pulley or the very expensive RS single sheave pulley.

From 97 993 - right at 8" back of case to front of clutch. ~6.25" to center of pully.

I 'd actually rather use the earlier stuff - console, mount and A/C mount. - I like prefer the look.

Does the expensive RS single pulley have some accomodation for damping harmonics like the rubberized A/C Crank pulley on the 964 - or has that proven to be less of a risk than previously suspected?

No, the only avaialable factory single sheave pulley is the 993RS/CS one, no harmonic balancer

993RS/CS single pulley on left

Some(but not many) Cup cars did use them, the only reported issue was an increase in NVH.

OK, revisiting: I've had some more time to poke around with this - at this point, an engine mount, crossmember and AC pedestal from a 3.2 has been mounted, using the compressor cradle from the 3.2 and a compressor from a 964 and it JUST fits without contacting the #4 intake runner or boot. It DOES touch the fuel line nut at the fuel rail, but I am looking at increasing the height of the compressor or tweaking the rail to correct that interference.

I've had a conversation with an top-level race engine builder that I trust about removing the harmonic balancer and feel comfortable discarding it. I may or may not tear down and rebuild at this time - if so, I'll balance the crank assembly to completely remove the spectre of crank failure due to harmonics... but as I said, I have confidence in this particular dissenting opinion on the necessity of the balancer at this time.

NOW THEN, I am going to have to sort out the crank pulleys, nontheless! The compressor pulley valley falls just off the edge of the alternator pulley on the stock 964 setup - the two valleys are off by approx. 3/16". I am considering using 2 single-belt billet pulleys from Rothsport or Patrick or similar with an appropriate spacer between them to get the alignment correct on the outermost pulley to run the AC compressor. Assuming the single-belt crank pulleys are similar in diameter to the innermost (fan) pulley on the 964, the compressor speed should be comparable to stock, albeit increased, somewhat (I hope?) - we shall see....

As an interesting side note, I stumbled upon a picture of the exact setup I am after on Jim Patrick's 3.6L conversion parts page on Patrick Motorsports' website! I'll be calling Jim Monday to see if he has his own pulley solution available for purchase - then I'll scrap the dual billet pulley with spacer plan.

Any comments, warnings, or musings?

This is what I'm after: (Jim, if use of your photo is an issue, let me know and I'll remove it)

Old-school engine mount and sheetmetal.

Keith,
I used a back dated crossmember and engine console mount along with the Patrick motorsports single pulley conversion. Works perfectly. I have a 964 bottom end and 993 (95) top end and motronic. I spoke to Jim Patrick before discarding the harmonic balancer. He said it would not cause a problem. My rotating assembly was fully balanced by Ollie's. Others had somewhat strong opinions that I may be setting myself up for crank failure.

At a 1k words per picture, here's a few grand. I believe my engine console is from an SC, it is definitely not the later Carrera (84 to 89) which allows use of a stacked crank pulley.

Finally, I cannot comment on whether AC will fit. I don't run. Backdated setup would likely work. You might also explore the clewett serpentine belt setup, but not sure if it would clear the console mount.

I use the old sheet metal, too. I had to fill in some sheet metal near the cam towers and adjacent to the console mount itself.

Hope that helps,

Doug

ok, so in the way of all things around here, I decided I really wanted to use an earlier fan/alternator/fan shroud assembly as well as the early-style engine console and mount. This would be coupled with backdated heat and engine tine, of course, so I needed a solution for the fan shroud.

This is to be a 3.6 with SC/Carrera fan assembly, backdated heat and engine tin, and a repro RSR mount. To make this all happen, I need a hybrid 3.6/early fan shroud.

This where Damon comes in - Working with Series 9000, I am blending their early RSR fan shroud with a 3.6 shroud (for that look, you understand)

Damon will take this bastard master and pull a mold off of it to produce the RSR amber fiberglass final product.

Here is the work thusfar:

Cool, eh?

- Imagine this with PMOs or ITBs/Motec... Should really look the part in the engine bay!

yeah - it's virtually identical to the Porsche rally tanks, and far more reasonably priced!

(easy to spill while filling, though )

Hey Keith, nice work as usual. I'll buy one of those new 3.6 back dated fan shrouds from you when you are ready.

Let me know, thanks.
